Problem checking for updates - Code 80240442 - Windows Update ran into a problem

Just updated to 8.1 update 1 manually hoping that it would clear an issue I'm having with Windows update, but to no avail.  (Oh - and the error message before the Win8.1 Update 1 was 80244FFF.  I think it's the same issue, just a new number.)

I've not been able to connect to Windows Update for over a month, and nothing I've tried has managed to reset it.

bizarre, my update is working after months of failure. i am not joking. BUT only automatically. if i try to check for updates manually i receive the same error code and no updates

AND i believe i have the solution for all of these problems...

i needed to restart my modem. as soon as it had restarted, automatic updates worked. i think all who are suffering from this problem should at least give this a try. just unplug your modem, wait 30 seconds then re-plug in your modem or push the restart button. it is worth a try.

    Is you computer connected to a domain network?

    It is possible that there may be some issue with BIOS.

    I'm not planning on investigating the BIOS issue. ASUS Live Update is supposed to notify me of any need to update BIOS and it doesn't indicate that is a problem. As with others on this thread, WSUS was working just fine until a couple of weeks ago. I seriously doubt that BIOS is the problem.

    You may try updating BIOS and check the issue.

    Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

    I have done pretty much everything on this thread except manually reviewing BIOS (ASUS has a system update utility and it says I am up to date) and going through the considerable hassle of another system "refresh."

    The results have been uninteresting. If it is some sort of repair, the action has occasionally resulted in some sort of repair log (a few things supposedly fixed) but then there is no change in the error message. Back when I first noticed this problem, the basic repair advice from MS KB resulted in the error message changing from one code to another I recall. I don't have a record of all the steps I've taken with detailed notes. I've probably tried about a dozen "fixes" over the past week or ten days, most of which are quick or run in the background without disrupting my ability to continue working on my computer. But basically nothing interesting results.
