How do I find the product key for Windows 8.1

Original title: Product Key

I downloaded Windows 8.1 (free) from the Microsoft web site. My understanding was that in doing so, a new product key would be generated. I do not know where/how to find the new product key. Can someone help me out with this? Was I mistaken and do I use the product key I have for Windows 8?

    Microsoft to be helpful should provide easy responses to these questions.  They make a lot of money but they have lousy customer service.  Take note Microsoft and do something to fix this.

There on the site site was written that foe product key click on FAQ.

    Now I have setup and I want to install it please tell me from where I can get productkey. Please help me with this.

    Buy one from Microsoft!

    However as Windows 10 is the current version it would make more sense to buy that license rather than Windows 8

    Do you have a question?

    Upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 does NOT generate another key. Activation is based on the original Windows 8 License.

    What this means is Windows 8.1 could not be installed from disk as the only key held in the BIOS is not valid.
