If you registered the computer with Sony and it is not a year old contact Tech Support and they can reinstall it for you.
Good luck

Original title: Product Key
I downloaded Windows 8.1 (free) from the Microsoft web site. My understanding was that in doing so, a new product key would be generated. I do not know where/how to find the new product key. Can someone help me out with this? Was I mistaken and do I use the product key I have for Windows 8?

i have lose my product key for window 8.1...
Can you Help me to giveme new product key.
If the computer was supplied with Windows 8 then you haven't lost the key, you never had it. There is no direct need for it.
The product key, as many have told you before HairyFool , is needed for several reasons such as the Microsoft OS upgrade. Why do you keep stating "there is no direct need for it." Better to remain silent and thought of as a fool.
The key is embedded in the BIOS. In the case of a clean reinstall Windows 8.1 setup will authenticate itself from the BIOS following setup. The key is not needed during the upgrade to Windows 10. Embedded keys are not needed for recovery media download.
So what is the key needed for?
