How do I find the product key for Windows 8.1
Original title: Product Key
I downloaded Windows 8.1 (free) from the Microsoft web site. My understanding was that in doing so, a new product key would be generated. I do not know where/how to find the new product key. Can someone help me out with this? Was I mistaken and do I use the product key I have for Windows 8?

2015-06-16T06:05:57+00:00 If you upgraded from Windows 7 then you would have been sent the key by email and if you log into your store account you can review your purchase history.
If you upgraded from 8 to 8.1 via the Store then the 8 key is still active.
Either way a keyfinder tool will tell what keys are in effect.

2015-06-14T07:57:11+00:00 That all makes perfect sense, except that it ignores the principle point: "You must have a Windows 8.1 product key to download Windows 8.1 INSTALLATION MEDIA, without which you cannot do a refresh of Windows 8.1." No one with this issue wants to reinstall Windows 8.1 via Microsoft. We need the installation media in order to refresh a corrupted Windows 8.1. We don't want to reinstall all of our files and applications.
For the Windows 8.1 downloader yes you need a RETAIL product key to initiate the download. Eventually Microsoft took into account the feedback and dissatisfaction of the Windows 8.1 downloader and made a Windows 8.1 with Update 1 downloader. The new downloader does not require a product key to initiate the download of the .iso. Moreover the updated Windows 8.1 "Edition" with update 1 .iso will accept Windows 8 "Edition" and Windows 8.1 "Edition" keys in the case of OEM keys it inputs them automatically from the UEFI BIOS. 2015-06-14T03:46:05+00:00 I was able to use this Microsoft Installation Media Creation tool , and use my Windows 8 key to create the media , both DVD and a USB drive . I then installed Windows , made me re-enter the key to activate ( I had to call in to reactivate , a minor inconvenience , had to punch in the numbers it gave me , all because it was the 4th time in 3 weeks I had to reinstall due to a failing motherboard and hard drive ).

After installation I had Windows 8.1 installed . I had to do the update to Windows 8.1 Update of course.
