Windows 8.1 Pro x64 UEFI very slow boot and shutdown

One other thing I noticed on another board, and I checked on my computer, is that if you use the "Start" menu to shut down the startup is significantly longer than when you use the "charm".  In my case, startup goes from about 13 seconds to about a minute and a half.  Am using W8.1.

I think the reason using the shut down feature in the "Start" menu makes the computer boot longer is because it is the "normal" shut down feature. And in the charm, the shut down feature is the hybrid shut down feature, which makes the booting time shorter and faster.

You can test this using the command line:

Normal Shut Down: Shutdown -s -f -t 00

Hybrid Shut Down: Shutdown -s -f -t 00 -hybrid

So if anyone knows how to change the "normal" shut down in the "start" menu to hybrid shutdown using some kinds of command codes, that would fix the slow shut down when using start menu to shut down.

This is the reason why PC with W8.1 have very slow boot up time.

With shutdown option in start button, boot time is ~ 1 Min

With shutdown option in charmbar, boot time is 10 secs

Note: My laptop's HDD is only 5400rpm

So ladies and gentlemen,  with this thread almost at 100 posts and no definitive fix yet I say we round up what temporary fixes/workarounds we have discovered plus a list of things we have all tried and whether they've had an impact on the issue. If I miss anything, please let me know and I'll add it to the list.

As a rundown of the issues I've read from the entire thread, a common symptom seems to be massive read/writes to the Windows drive upon shutdown,  oddly some are reporting very slow shutdown and startup or a combination of fast booting and slow shutdown or vice versa. It seems that the issue is very sporadic and doesn't affect just one system configuration on it's own. We have a very good spread of system specs here and all are experiencing these issues whether it's a brand new SSD or an older 5400RPM HDD. Which tells me it's purely OS based and has nothing to do with hardware. It doesn't seem to matter whether Win8 is upgraded to 8.1 or like myself, you do a fresh 8.1 install, no one is safe from this bug it seems. A common idea is that Windows 8.1 doesn't suffer the problem as Windows 8.1 Pro does.

As with all workarounds, your mileage may vary. Give them all a try, report back and I'll keep this list UTD.

BIOS Update

Most claiming no improvement whatsoever, me being one of them.

Restoring UEFI and enabling Fast Boot.

No improvement seen from one user.

Cleaning out Windows.OLD files.

No improvement seen from one user.

Flashing BIOS to fix USB3.0 issues in Win8 worked for one poster.

Running CCleaner and SuperAntiSpyware

Fixed the issue for one user but then ran into the same issue again right after. Supports the sporadic idea.

Reinstalling iTunes

Worked for one user. cut down their 4min S/D to under a minute but went right back to slow shutdowns.

Creating a new user account

Was reported that a user had tried this and it fixed the shutdown and startup times.

I have the same problem--shut down and reboot is slow, and Sleep mode is practically unusable.  I think going into sleep mode takes more time than shutting down, and starting up from Sleep the computer hangs and shows me the Windows Session manager is using 30-40% CPU until about the 5th minute in.  And don't get me started on the graphics card issues and the network card that stops working every few minutes.

10 pages in and still no response from Microsoft?  This IS their official forum isn't it?

I've disabled the option "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" in the power settings and now the shutdown time changed form 5min to 40sec ....
