Ever since I upgraded to Windows 8.1 via the in-store update my PC takes a good 3-4 minutes to boot!!! I am on a GA-X79-UD3 + i7-3820 + Samsung SSD 840 for system drive. I have updated all my drivers to Windows 8.1 compatible ones and still. I have checked via Samsung Magician and the drive is using AHCI mode on (Intel PCH) Sata 3 6Gb/s. I have tried restoring my UEFI to default settings and enabling Fast Boot but still?? On Windows 8 it would boot in 5 seconds....
EDIT: Have tried Safe Boot and Clean Boot, still same

My best solution to all the Win8/8.1 problems was to return to Windows 7. This cured all my issues!
I'm sorry Microsoft! I've been using Microsoft products since MSDos and the cost of ram was $50.00 a meg. Windows 8/8.1 is by far the worst OS they have had.
Hopefully your next system will be better or I may become a Mac person.

Yep - Qualcomm Atheros driverwas the problem for me too, also the overall performance increased pretty good
My laptop was shutting down very slowly. I had no problems with startup. I ended up formatting and reinstalling windows 8 pro and then updating to windows 8.1 from the store. I wasn't having any problems until a specific update from Windows Update. I went back to the restore point before the update and again no problems. I then installed one update at a time until I found the problem update. It was the Qualcomm Atheros Communications - Bluetooth Controller - Qualcomm Atheros AR3012 Bluetooth 4.0 + HS driver update from Windows Update released July 2013. Hopefully this helps someone else having trouble with slow shutdown times. I'm using my manufacturers driver for the Bluetooth and WIFI and everything is working fine.
I was having this problem on my Dell 660 with Windows 8.1 Pro - taking over 2 minutes to boot up. I had tried just about everything I could find on the Internet. Then today...............at last a solution for me. It may or may not work for you, but, if you are like I was, it's worth a try.
Go to Run > type "msconfig" > click on "Services" tab > Uncheck box next to "App Readiness and restart your pc. For me it was a "miracle" fast startup. I hope it works for someone else in here. Good Luck.
