Windows 8.1 Pro x64 UEFI very slow boot and shutdown

Take care about "having the solution" : you can pass a lot of time as i did, trying different recommandations and still having this problem, even more if you do a bad manipulation. There is not one reason but a lot as we see on theses 17 pages of this thread.

• bluetooth
• Drivers incompatibilities
• but also others ...

I have desactivated my bluetooth, then check deaply and updated drivers (some are very difficult to find as accelerometer protection and some cannot be desactivated to test...) without any major improvement. Then i have analyse Win log of Boot sequence and see a lot of errors on systems program that i don't know and also "time out exceeded" (30 000 ms) on different services not started.

After 2 weeks of hard and hazardous work which has to be done by MS, without success, i decided to go back on Win 8 Pro x64 (not easy...) and i get again a fast computer.

The problem now is that, until october, MS has not aknowledged  these incompatibility between Win 8 and 8.1, so that we don't know if and when it will be fixed. So, it is impossible to expect or plan a safe update to Win 8.1 without problems.

I recommand to wait on Win8 untill MS provide a major release and declare these problems solved.

It is an incredible  big MS fault !

Please kindly elaborate on what you did to delete old Win 8 files and "cleaned up hard disk and registry".

I updated from Win8  home premium to 8.1 in October and had no issues with the restart speed. My problem in restart after I installed an 80+ MB Windows 8.1 critical update about 2 weeks ago.  The restart now takes 5 minutes, although the start after powering up still takes well under 30 seconds. 

I used Dell's disk cleanup utility to clean up the hard disk and used  System Mechanics Registry tuner and unable to improve the restart speed.

Rangerat's advice is right on.  I to encourage you to read this entire thread, the answers to your questions are here (probably page 15) and yes it will take a little time but you obviously have a little techie in you so go for it and learn something new....it took me days of googling to finally figure it out and this thread has the good info.   Don't waste your time going back to 8, it is a clunky disaster, 8.1 is much better, think Win 7 with added features.

The Lenovo community may have your answer with updated drivers.

Start checking drivers in device manager--device by device-- sometimes there are flagged devices.  If no flags start Disabling suspect  drivers and shutting down until it doesn't hang on shutdown.  Start with Bluetooth-LAN-WIFI.  Systematically disable, test shutdown, then re-enabling and disabling and testing a few each time until you find the bad driver/s--- now UNINSTALL THAT DRIVER and when you reboot windows will want to find a driver to install... search windows 8.1 local-NOT THE INTERNET.   8.1 will (hopefully) find and install its own generic Microsoft drivers and the device is working.

Next go to the control panel and TURN OFF automatic updates.   The problem is Automatic Updates will  replace the generic driver with the device vendors bad driver -- that is why the problem comes back a day later.  Set Automatic Updates to notify you when new updates are available and YOU check the updates (like a techie does) and Hide that update and wait until the proper update shows up.

My is an old DELL VOSTRO 1310, and the boot used to take 20 to 40 seconds with WIn8.

After upgrading to WIn8.1 last month it takes 2 to 7 minutes. Takes too much time with HD activity with black screen. On the login screen, when it appears, you can type but it does not display anything for some minutes. And it sometimes, randomly freezes.

I've already cleaned the register, cleaned apps from startup, created a new account and deleted the old one (someone in another forum said it could solve), and it indeed seems to be a little better, but still with unacceptable performance.

I will finally give up now and come back to Win8 :(

 

If Windows cannot work properly on third party hardware then Microsof should make and sell their own machines before everybody with some funds goes to Apple. I don't care about offending drivers in Windows 8.1, everything worked fine on Windows 8 so it's Microsoft's problem.

Actually it is the add on vendors problem not updating their drivers to work correctly with Win 8.1. Why not just disable the offending drivers and get on with enjoying your computer with fast boot and shut down times. Blaming MS will get you nowhere.

How can I disable the offending drivers? I don't think I installed any drivers from Lenovo, all of them came from Windows itself and Windows Update. You mean going to Device Manager and disabling the device? Or uninstalling?

 

I guess I can disable the fingerprint reader and the dual graphics card on the BIOS, some others on Devices Manager but there are some devices I just can't disabke or install any other drivers.

Actually the drivers were installed by Lenovo not Microsoft. See the posts on this thread as to how others have done this successfully. Going to Device Manager and disabling is the first method. Others have installed newer or other drivers with success. It took me a day or two to find the offending driver.
