Windows 8.1 tablet, turn off screen while keeping tablet on?

just got a new windows 8.1 tablet ( omni 10 if you need to know for some reason ) and i keep finding myself wanting to turn off my screen while keeping the tablet from turning off or sleeping. i usually us my tablet to download OS updates for my android phone, or other large files, but whenever i push the power button the tablet goes into "sleep" mode and stops downloading everything. the only solution i can find is to keep the screen on, but id rather not do that to keep it from killing the battery faster that it needs to. also cant find anything in the power options about screen power off timer... only sleep timer :/

    Microsoft:  You are NOT listening!!!  The questions asked have to do with a Tablet (a touch screen PC), not a desktop or a standard laptop.

    In Win/8 (and 8.1), you have changed the Power Options in the Control Panel significantly, with total disregard to the user community needs, and for no apparent logical reason.  The Control Panel/Power Options in Win/7 were quite different, and were logical.

    In Win/7, you had these options:

    Dim the display

    Turn off the display

    Put the computer to sleep

    Adjust plan brightness

    In Win/8 (8.1), you have these options:

    Put the computer to sleep

    Adjust plan brightness

    "Sleep" and "Turn off the diplay" are NOT independent options.  Opening/using/changing the so-called "Advanced power settings" does NOT allow the user to specify independent Sleep and Display turn-off after options.  They are tied together, as changing one changes both.

    Like the users asking for your help, I need to keep my Tablet style PC "Awake", but also turn off the display after xx minutes.  I can't, and for no logical, reasonable, meaningful reason.  Please help!!!

    I could only find BIOS 313 update which release in august, so it is not a fairly a new update, and I couldn't run spotify when screen is off with bios 313. 

    Could you express more how did you manage it? 

    P.S. I am talking about ASUS T100ta

    Hi all,

    My issue has been resolved, Asus have provided a bios update via their Asus LiveUpdate.

    My screen will now turn off when I close the lid on my transformer and my music still plays!

    It seems that this was a bios issue but still something that device manufacturers and Microsoft need to collaborate with to provide a solution for other devices that have the same issue.

    Wow, echo the comments here of how such a basic feature in a mobile device seems to have been omitted.

    While the registry edit partially gave a solution so that i can set screen off after x minutes, it still isn't a complete solution.

    I use my tablet to set some downloads going then want to be able to push the power button and turn the screen off. I'll then set after how long i want it to sleep of inactivity just in case i forget i have my downloads running. This is exactly how an Android device works.

    'Turn Display Off' clearly works as it's now an option to set on a timer after editing the registry, so how hard is it to have it as an option on 'Power button and lid options' as currently all i still have is Sleep.

    I guess another half baked solution would be a cmd line to call the command to 'Turn off display' but I wouldnt know how to do this, maybe someone else would?

    Update: This may help some people, i found a program that will turn off your display:

    You'll need to have .Net Framework installed and to run it as Administrator (right click) although if you use UAC you'll get prompted each time so i guess i'm turning UAC off for now. Microsoft clearly need to fix this whole mess, its quite laughable.
