just got a new windows 8.1 tablet ( omni 10 if you need to know for some reason ) and i keep finding myself wanting to turn off my screen while keeping the tablet from turning off or sleeping. i usually us my tablet to download OS updates for my android phone, or other large files, but whenever i push the power button the tablet goes into "sleep" mode and stops downloading everything. the only solution i can find is to keep the screen on, but id rather not do that to keep it from killing the battery faster that it needs to. also cant find anything in the power options about screen power off timer... only sleep timer :/

Update? All I did was inform everybody that I had found the perfect seamless solution many months ago and that Windows 10 has a solution built in to the operating system.

I apologize that I haven't seen this thread, earlier!! Very early in the Windows 8/8.1 game and after I bought my first Dell Venue, I discovered an app called TouchMe Gesture Studio. I have used it, extensively, for some time, now, and love it.
The other app mentioned throws up a black screen and this may be a solution for some, but I wanted to power down, completely, so this is better for me. Reduces battery usage. A black screen actually uses more battery than any other screen scenario.
Also fyi, Windows 10, which I am running quite successfully on a Dell Venue 11 Pro 7130 with a core i5 processor, has "power Off Display" as a power button option. Screenshot attached.
In windows 8, I was able to go to power settings by clicking on the battery icon, more power options and then I click on the advanced settings that in which there was a drop down. I click on drop down for display, and then for screens time out and set the display to 1 minute but the sleep time is set to 30 minutes. So after 1 minute the music will play uninterrupted for the next 29 minutes with screen off, both these numbers were completely customizable.
I love how the support guy doesn't even understand the issue and never addresses the problem. A year later and there is still no fix for this problem. How can Microsoft expect to hold its share of the market with support like this? Open source will be the death of you, Microsoft. I can't wait.
