[UNSOLVED] Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working AGAIN after windows 8.1 update 1

JP8851 has provided a new BIOS version for people who have the Taichi21 or 21a (answer marked below) . The BIOS version is not official yet, however, and many users are reporting problems with the BIOS update such as USB problems, pen digitizer problems and audio problems. Therfore I have still marked this problem unsolved, but the first answer below may work for you.

THIS IS A PROBLEM YET AGAIN.

ASUS, MICROSOFT, AND INTEL: HUNDREDS (IF NOT THOUSANDS) OF USERS ARE FRUSTRATED BY YOUR LACK OF SUPPORT AND COMPATIBILITY CHECKS WITH EVERY UPDATE. WHY SHOULD A $1000+ LAPTOP BE NEGLECTED THE PROPER "V.I.P." SUPPORT WE WERE PROMISED? PLEASE FIX THIS PROMPTLY, IT IS FRUSTRATING FOR THE USERS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT GOES WRONG EVERY TIME WINDOWS UPDATES.

Note:

Previously, the Asus Taichi had problems with the back screen not working after the windows 8.1 update. Recently, Micrsosoft released a NEW UPDATE that ruined the fix mentioned below, and all the supposedly long term fixes Asus made with the bios updates and the graphics driver updates.

This problem had originally been solved for windows 8.1 (without update 1) by downloading the following old graphics driver from the asus website:

***It is noted that if the problem keeps coming back after installing this driver, you may have to change your Windows and Intel Driver update setting and turn off auto updating.

Other notes: This driver downgrade solves the issue with the lid not working, but some users have reported that many smaller problems arise after downgrading. Therefore, this solution is not completely stable, but it is a lot better than any other solution currently available and solves the main issue.

This is great news... Glad it's working with Intel 3412 as I have that installed already on my 21A. If Asus send out the new Bios for the 21A I will share it and ask the same from anyone who receives it please.

Well people, ASUS has come through with the new Bios for Taichi 21 & 21A. They emailed me the zip files this afternoon. Took me a couple hours to backup and test before posting.

The 21 takes Bios 211 and 21A takes 205. I've uploaded them here:

To check which Bios you need if you haven't checked already is to reboot and press F2 until you see the Bios screen. When displayed, press F12 and the Bios you have will scroll through in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Use the 2420 version of Winflash from the Asus support site.

After flashing the firmware Bios to 205 on my 21A, I installed 8.1 Update from Windows Update and my screen is working correctly.

Thumbs up Asus.

Ironically the Bios was dated 21/4/14. Seems Asus has had this fix for a while and probably testing before releasing so I don't feel like a guinea pig. But I do feel some of you owe Asus a small apology for some of the comments aimed at them despite it taking too long to come through. In any case, I'm not reactivating auto-updates in Windows Updates.

I had the same problem. It started after some time.  Twice I've tried to install and the same problem.

After a long hard working weekend I moved again to win 8 and stay there for now.

 

P.s: it is not the only issue unresolved. Juniper concoction disconnecting is another.

I agree, this update is a complete mess. I was able to resolve the issue with the lid by downloading an old graphics driver from the asus website. Heres the link to download the driver:  http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

The driver is older, so if you would rather just reinstall windows 8, I found that you just do a restore or refresh in the system settings. Thanks for your help again.

    Well, just one or two minor issues that seem to be beneath Asus.

    Like empty disc files that should contain an operating system.

    Like a plethora of Asus disc partitions all empty but unremovable.

    Like a failure to warn me, after the shambles was well known to Asus, that I should not install MS updates.

    Like off again, on again support for Windows 8.1.

    Like taking 6 months to tell me the product was not being offered for sale in the UK.

    Like trying to suggest my peculiar 31 has a unique problem, except that from these columns I know the problem is world wide.

    I am quite sure that Asus would like us all to calm down so the can blame MS software for this mess. Unfortunately I remain convinced that the problem lies with an inadequate Marketing outfit who are trying to pass the buck

    So I suggest that Asus keep their office politics within Asus, reward the technical guys who have been trying to field this customer anger, and sack the Marketing dept..

    This product does not need "time and dedication", it needs to be part of Asus mainstream product line, and the way stock of the 31 is being run down or withdrawn world wide just adds to concern

    I always seem to come back to this thread, I wonder why? Maybe it's because I have a laptop that was very much intended only to run on Windows 8 and ASUS might not have anticipated that Windows 8.1 and subsequent updates would ruin the basic fundamentality of their laptop.

    In short, the laptop is great, provided that it runs on Windows 8 alone. Installing Windows 8.1 is perfectly fine, provided that the notebook as the latest BIOS and is running either the ASUS or latest Intel version of the driver for the Intel HD Graphics 4000.

    For those of you that managed to get Windows 8.1 working on your ASUS Taichi after the BIOS update, congratulations! You're now in this middle ground where you have Windows 8.1 working but cannot subsequently install KB2919355 because that will cause your computer to be virtually unbootable aside from Safe Mode.

    For those of you that still are sitting on Windows 8, you probably won't be able to upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Store as it seems to include KB2919355, though I'm not entirely confirmed on the matter.  Those of you in this boat who want to upgrade to 8.1 but not have to get KB2919355, will need to find any sort of Windows 8.1 media or purchase a backup disc from Microsoft for about $15.

    The good news in all of this? - Supposedly, there is another BIOS update on the way to correct the problem, at least on the ASUS Taichi 31's end that should correct the problems encountered after installing KB2919355. Remember folks, that firmware and BIOS are the best ways the operating system can talk to the hardware, while drivers allow it to use it properly. When a major update to either the operating system or the drivers changes how things are intended to work, especially on a computer like the ASUS Taichi, this is what you get.

    The bad news - Aside from the fact that Windows 8 users will need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 within 2 years or no longer be supported under the Support Lifecycle, consumers with Windows 8.1 will need to install KB2919355 by May 13th or they will not be able to receive any new updates beyond that point. That potentially includes security updates.

    So let's hope ASUS can send out that BIOS Update really quick or those of us who have managed to get onto Windows 8.1, will lose our ability to get updates until KB2919355 is installed.

    Hey, dont get all over me, im just saying that this is complex machine that requieres more tweaking than a regular laptop to keep up to date. Nearly every dual screen / tablet hybrid, has problems with these new windows updates, go look around in the forums.

    Asus is by no means responsible for not warning to not apply a Windows upgrade. If you apply it, it is because you have done some research about the new update or ticked automatic updates.

    Its a 3rd generation computer, and as with many other devices, cell phones, etc. new Operating Systems can mess up drivers and so on.

    I have the Taichi 31, have upgraded, downgraded, restored etc, and my partition is intact, so the problem might not be unique, but its not general like the video driver updates. Sending it back to Asus will get you the partition back.

    I understand this is a discontinued product, and are taking care of the issue of this 8.1.1 mess, it could have been much worse.

    Dont count on actions being taken, i do not know how many Taichis have been sold, here we are around 15 complaining, that is nothing for a giant like Asus.

    Oh, and in catalonia everybody speaks spanish, whether they like it more or less, it is still the official, national language
