[UNSOLVED] Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working AGAIN after windows 8.1 update 1

JP8851 has provided a new BIOS version for people who have the Taichi21 or 21a (answer marked below) . The BIOS version is not official yet, however, and many users are reporting problems with the BIOS update such as USB problems, pen digitizer problems and audio problems. Therfore I have still marked this problem unsolved, but the first answer below may work for you.

THIS IS A PROBLEM YET AGAIN.

ASUS, MICROSOFT, AND INTEL: HUNDREDS (IF NOT THOUSANDS) OF USERS ARE FRUSTRATED BY YOUR LACK OF SUPPORT AND COMPATIBILITY CHECKS WITH EVERY UPDATE. WHY SHOULD A $1000+ LAPTOP BE NEGLECTED THE PROPER "V.I.P." SUPPORT WE WERE PROMISED? PLEASE FIX THIS PROMPTLY, IT IS FRUSTRATING FOR THE USERS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT GOES WRONG EVERY TIME WINDOWS UPDATES.

Note:

Previously, the Asus Taichi had problems with the back screen not working after the windows 8.1 update. Recently, Micrsosoft released a NEW UPDATE that ruined the fix mentioned below, and all the supposedly long term fixes Asus made with the bios updates and the graphics driver updates.

This problem had originally been solved for windows 8.1 (without update 1) by downloading the following old graphics driver from the asus website:

***It is noted that if the problem keeps coming back after installing this driver, you may have to change your Windows and Intel Driver update setting and turn off auto updating.

Other notes: This driver downgrade solves the issue with the lid not working, but some users have reported that many smaller problems arise after downgrading. Therefore, this solution is not completely stable, but it is a lot better than any other solution currently available and solves the main issue.

This is great news... Glad it's working with Intel 3412 as I have that installed already on my 21A. If Asus send out the new Bios for the 21A I will share it and ask the same from anyone who receives it please.

Well people, ASUS has come through with the new Bios for Taichi 21 & 21A. They emailed me the zip files this afternoon. Took me a couple hours to backup and test before posting.

The 21 takes Bios 211 and 21A takes 205. I've uploaded them here:

To check which Bios you need if you haven't checked already is to reboot and press F2 until you see the Bios screen. When displayed, press F12 and the Bios you have will scroll through in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Use the 2420 version of Winflash from the Asus support site.

After flashing the firmware Bios to 205 on my 21A, I installed 8.1 Update from Windows Update and my screen is working correctly.

Thumbs up Asus.

Ironically the Bios was dated 21/4/14. Seems Asus has had this fix for a while and probably testing before releasing so I don't feel like a guinea pig. But I do feel some of you owe Asus a small apology for some of the comments aimed at them despite it taking too long to come through. In any case, I'm not reactivating auto-updates in Windows Updates.

I had the same problem. It started after some time.  Twice I've tried to install and the same problem.

After a long hard working weekend I moved again to win 8 and stay there for now.

 

P.s: it is not the only issue unresolved. Juniper concoction disconnecting is another.

I agree, this update is a complete mess. I was able to resolve the issue with the lid by downloading an old graphics driver from the asus website. Heres the link to download the driver:  http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

The driver is older, so if you would rather just reinstall windows 8, I found that you just do a restore or refresh in the system settings. Thanks for your help again.

    As of today my problems with the lid screen have been solved!

    My Taichi 21 is working perfectly.

    The ASUS mirror screen utility is working as it should.

    TY to ASUS and Microsoft for fixing the problem.

    To fix the problem I did the latest Windows 8.1 Update and everything works as it should now.

    Simple as that.

    There is one continuing problem with the lid screen Windows button.

    When using touch or pen input to the lid top screen, it's easy to accidentally switch from desktop mode to tile mode.

    This can be solved by placing a small rectangular piece of thin metal over the button and taping it in place with masking tape.  This will effectively disable the lid top Windows button.

    A bit of a kluge but saves endless annoyance of random switching between desktop mode and tile world mode.

    If you check back through this lengthy correspondence you will find that some taichi 31s sere supplied with empty restore partitions - all of them, and there were several, were empty. Zilch. Nada.

    So any good little user who did as he was told and applied the Windows 8 updates found he had a largely inoperative machine and could not/can not get back to the state as delivered. All is not as simple as your note suggests.

    Personally by reading, thinking about and then applying some of the earlier posts here, which I have discovered to be most valuable, my 31 seems to have the major problems fixed. Autorotate is still a mess, with one of the options shown in the adverts simply not being available.

    But at least I can get work done, under Windows 8.1 Pro, which is bang up to date and from which I have taken every backup and security option I can find (all on external discs) in case tomorrow brings another fiasco.

    Yes... you make a good point about the useful info in this string of posts. 

    Here's my experience with that:

    I tried almost everything posted here that seemed remotely credible, and nothing was working. Same old blank lid top screen. This, over a period of many months off-and-on.  

    When the string of failures became too frustrating, I just put the Taichi 21 into its box, and used my other five pc's, laptops, and interactive pen display to sustain productivity.  

    Occasionally, I would check back here for anything new or potentially helpful.  Hence, the past week I got out the Taichi and tried the latest in the string of suggestions.  

    Again, no change in the blank status of the lid display.  I was getting ready to put the Taichi away again, and tried one last Windows update and re-boot.  

    The updater installed several updates, and Win 8.1 restarted and to my amazement the lid top display came up with the Win8 desktop.

    I then checked that touch and pen input was working on the lid top. Both worked as well.   Next, I checked the laptop display.  It was also working and displaying the same desktop as the lid top.

    The Taichi display mode button was also functional and I was able to setup mirror mode with good results.

    Finally, I tried some applications to verify they were working with both pen and touch. Again, everything worked.

    In this satisfactory situation, I am leaving well enough alone.

    Regretfully, I have no idea why the Taichi 21 is working for me.

    I can only mention things I did yesterday before  the Taichi 21 started to work.

    1-Went to the ASUS site and downloaded the recommended driver and bios setup. (as I have done many times before)

    2-Went to Microsoft windows update and got all updates through May 25th 2014.

    (as I have done many times before)

    3-Shut down the system and allowed updates to install.

    4-Restarted the system and allowed updates to finish installing.

    5-Stared wide-eyed at the functioning lid top display.

    Will it continue to work?  

    Should I allow any further Windows Updates to install? 

    All good questions.

    Who knows?  

    A guess as to what was happening...

    Probably the ASUS site gave me something new, and the Windows Update had something new, the combination of which solved the problem.

    Also, I've been eating right and exercising.

    AS to the causal explanation of what is going on, I leave it to the experts.
