[UNSOLVED] Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working AGAIN after windows 8.1 update 1

JP8851 has provided a new BIOS version for people who have the Taichi21 or 21a (answer marked below) . The BIOS version is not official yet, however, and many users are reporting problems with the BIOS update such as USB problems, pen digitizer problems and audio problems. Therfore I have still marked this problem unsolved, but the first answer below may work for you.

Original question:

THIS IS A PROBLEM YET AGAIN.

ASUS, MICROSOFT, AND INTEL: HUNDREDS (IF NOT THOUSANDS) OF USERS ARE FRUSTRATED BY YOUR LACK OF SUPPORT AND COMPATIBILITY CHECKS WITH EVERY UPDATE. WHY SHOULD A $1000+ LAPTOP BE NEGLECTED THE PROPER "V.I.P." SUPPORT WE WERE PROMISED? PLEASE FIX THIS PROMPTLY, IT IS FRUSTRATING FOR THE USERS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT GOES WRONG EVERY TIME WINDOWS UPDATES.

Note:

Previously, the Asus Taichi had problems with the back screen not working after the windows 8.1 update. Recently, Micrsosoft released a NEW UPDATE that ruined the fix mentioned below, and all the supposedly long term fixes Asus made with the bios updates and the graphics driver updates.

This problem had originally been solved for windows 8.1 (without update 1) by downloading the following old graphics driver from the asus website:

http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

***It is noted that if the problem keeps coming back after installing this driver, you may have to change your Windows and Intel Driver update setting and turn off auto updating.

Other notes: This driver downgrade solves the issue with the lid not working, but some users have reported that many smaller problems arise after downgrading. Therefore, this solution is not completely stable, but it is a lot better than any other solution currently available and solves the main issue.

Original comments: After updating to windows 8.1, the back screen of my Asus Taichi does not work properly. After doing some searching, I read there were numerous problems with the Taichi after the update, all driver related.

This is great news... Glad it's working with Intel 3412 as I have that installed already on my 21A. If Asus send out the new Bios for the 21A I will share it and ask the same from anyone who receives it please.

Well people, ASUS has come through with the new Bios for Taichi 21 & 21A. They emailed me the zip files this afternoon. Took me a couple hours to backup and test before posting.

The 21 takes Bios 211 and 21A takes 205. I've uploaded them here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mxb1trbbctlnjm3/TAICHI21AS.211.zip

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ztcmga0mbv40i5/TAICHI21AAS.205.zip

To check which Bios you need if you haven't checked already is to reboot and press F2 until you see the Bios screen. When displayed, press F12 and the Bios you have will scroll through in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Use the 2420 version of Winflash from the Asus support site.

After flashing the firmware Bios to 205 on my 21A, I installed 8.1 Update from Windows Update and my screen is working correctly.

Thumbs up Asus.

Ironically the Bios was dated 21/4/14. Seems Asus has had this fix for a while and probably testing before releasing so I don't feel like a guinea pig. But I do feel some of you owe Asus a small apology for some of the comments aimed at them despite it taking too long to come through. In any case, I'm not reactivating auto-updates in Windows Updates.

Good luck people and the usual disclaimer applies to using these files. Caveat Emptor...

I had the same problem. It started after some time.  Twice I've tried to install and the same problem.

After a long hard working weekend I moved again to win 8 and stay there for now.

P.s: it is not the only issue unresolved. Juniper concoction disconnecting is another.

What a mess..

I agree, this update is a complete mess. I was able to resolve the issue with the lid by downloading an old graphics driver from the asus website. Heres the link to download the driver:  http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

The driver is older, so if you would rather just reinstall windows 8, I found that you just do a restore or refresh in the system settings. Thanks for your help again.

    Hi Chad,

Thanks for the message. Both devices are Taichi21s and I've used the same drivers that you are using. The only difference is that I can think of is the installation order of the drivers. I hardly believe this can be a  reason though. Anyway, I cannot revert back the BIOS update that I've already installed- V211. But with the rest I can play around. You installed them on the chronological order of release, didn't you? I will give that a try too.

    thanks

    D

    D -

After my device was returned from Asus reset to the factory settings, to including Windows 8.0, but BIOS updated to v211, I performed the following...

Step 1 - Install all Windows 8.0 updates (do not install Windows 8.1 yet)

Step 2 - Install the latest versions of all Asus software in chronological release date order.  Sequentially uninstall each utility, reboot, and install new utility in sequence.

    Driver Factory Version Version Date
    ASUS Display Calibration 1.0.1 V1.0.5 2013.01.16
    Intel Wireless Display Application 3.5.40.0 V3.5.41.0 2013.01.22
    Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework 6.0.5.1080 V6.0.7.1084 2013.02.25
    Instant On 3.0.2 V3.0.6 2013.03.22
    ASUS Screen Share 1.0.22 V1.0.26 2013.03.25
    ASUS Taichi Display Control 1.0.5 V1.0.13 2013.04.22
    ASUS Taichi Home 1.0.11 V1.0.30 2013.04.22
    Realtek Audio Driver 6.0.1.6748 V6.0.1.6870 2013.04.22
ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology 1.03.0005 V2.01.0005 2013.05.29
Intel WiFi Wireless LAN Driver V15.8.0.5 2013.05.29
    Windows BIOS Flash Utility 2.41.1 V2.42.0 2013.08.09
    ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities 1.0.0023 V1.0.0030 2013.07.11
ASUS Smart Gesture (Touchpad Driver) 1.0.35 V2.2.4 2013.09.27
    ASUS Live Update Utility 3.1.9 V3.2.6 2013.10.11
    ASUS Close Lid 1.0.10 V1.1.8 2013.10.18
    Power4Gear Hybrid Utility 2.0.4 V3.0.8 2014.04.24

Step 3 - Install Windows 8.1 which for me installed 8.1 update straight away.  It also automatically updated the Intel Graphics Driver to v10.18.10.3412 from the factory original v9.17.10.2857

    Step 4 - Install last Win 8.1 specific driver(s)

    Intel PROSet/Wireless Software for Bluetooth 2.6.1209.0268 V3.1.1309.0390 2013.10.11

That's where I am now with intermittent screen switching problems (usually after waking up from sleep).  No problems after a clean reboot, but not consistently reproducible.  I've seen some folks post about ATK Package v1.0.31 and Close Lid v1.1.9 beta, but I have not installed them.  I found ATK Package v1.0.31.  I have not been able to locate Close Lid v1.1.9 beta online.

    Hope that helps.

    Chad.

So, since that is a common problem for us, I will post here the answer of the technician who helped me and now, the external lid is working normally but the only thing is that it doesn't rotate automatically as it comes from factory. Here it follows:

"Thank you for contacting ASUS Service Care. Please update the bios to solve the problem.

Please firstly download the winflash utility and the latest BIOS, install the winflash

utility, run it and then set the path to the BIOS, then flash. You can download the utility

and the BIOS from the following website:

    BIOS 205 (TAICHI21A)

    http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/TAICHI21/TAICHI21AAS205.zip

    BIOS 211 (TAICHI21)

    http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/TAICHI21/TAICHI21AS211.zip

(You can check it in your bios to confirm your notebook is Taichi21A or Taichi21)

    Windows BIOS Flash Utility

    http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Apps\_for\_Win8/WinFlash/WinFlash\_Win8\_64

    _VER2420.zip

Please make sure that the power not cut during the operation. So that it can fix your problem."

    Cheers!

    Hi Anyone

Just to let you know that when I called Asus with this tablet not working problem, we first backdated the VGA driver, this made no apparent difference.  But when I mentioned the possible BIOS flash solution, the guy suggested I get the BIOS update from the Asus site, which I did.  I then simply followed their steps and flashed the BIOS to version 211, and all seems to work, including mirror screen.  So, perhaps this particular problem is over?

and: thanks to JP8851...the BIOS he has on dropbox is the same one Asus now has available on their support site.

    Peace, Geoff
