[UNSOLVED] Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working AGAIN after windows 8.1 update 1

JP8851 has provided a new BIOS version for people who have the Taichi21 or 21a (answer marked below) . The BIOS version is not official yet, however, and many users are reporting problems with the BIOS update such as USB problems, pen digitizer problems and audio problems. Therfore I have still marked this problem unsolved, but the first answer below may work for you.

ASUS, MICROSOFT, AND INTEL: HUNDREDS (IF NOT THOUSANDS) OF USERS ARE FRUSTRATED BY YOUR LACK OF SUPPORT AND COMPATIBILITY CHECKS WITH EVERY UPDATE. WHY SHOULD A $1000+ LAPTOP BE NEGLECTED THE PROPER "V.I.P." SUPPORT WE WERE PROMISED? PLEASE FIX THIS PROMPTLY, IT IS FRUSTRATING FOR THE USERS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT GOES WRONG EVERY TIME WINDOWS UPDATES.

Note:

Previously, the Asus Taichi had problems with the back screen not working after the windows 8.1 update. Recently, Micrsosoft released a NEW UPDATE that ruined the fix mentioned below, and all the supposedly long term fixes Asus made with the bios updates and the graphics driver updates.

This problem had originally been solved for windows 8.1 (without update 1) by downloading the following old graphics driver from the asus website:

***It is noted that if the problem keeps coming back after installing this driver, you may have to change your Windows and Intel Driver update setting and turn off auto updating.

Other notes: This driver downgrade solves the issue with the lid not working, but some users have reported that many smaller problems arise after downgrading. Therefore, this solution is not completely stable, but it is a lot better than any other solution currently available and solves the main issue.

This is great news... Glad it's working with Intel 3412 as I have that installed already on my 21A. If Asus send out the new Bios for the 21A I will share it and ask the same from anyone who receives it please.

Well people, ASUS has come through with the new Bios for Taichi 21 & 21A. They emailed me the zip files this afternoon. Took me a couple hours to backup and test before posting.

The 21 takes Bios 211 and 21A takes 205. I've uploaded them here:

To check which Bios you need if you haven't checked already is to reboot and press F2 until you see the Bios screen. When displayed, press F12 and the Bios you have will scroll through in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Use the 2420 version of Winflash from the Asus support site.

After flashing the firmware Bios to 205 on my 21A, I installed 8.1 Update from Windows Update and my screen is working correctly.

Thumbs up Asus.

Ironically the Bios was dated 21/4/14. Seems Asus has had this fix for a while and probably testing before releasing so I don't feel like a guinea pig. But I do feel some of you owe Asus a small apology for some of the comments aimed at them despite it taking too long to come through. In any case, I'm not reactivating auto-updates in Windows Updates.

I had the same problem. It started after some time.  Twice I've tried to install and the same problem.

After a long hard working weekend I moved again to win 8 and stay there for now.

 

P.s: it is not the only issue unresolved. Juniper concoction disconnecting is another.

I agree, this update is a complete mess. I was able to resolve the issue with the lid by downloading an old graphics driver from the asus website. Heres the link to download the driver:  http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

The driver is older, so if you would rather just reinstall windows 8, I found that you just do a restore or refresh in the system settings. Thanks for your help again.

    All, 

    I think we are all very frustrated with the dual screen issues on the TaiChi, and I want to also thank everyone for their posts.  I only hope that people at Intel, Microsoft, and most importantly, Asus are monitoring this forum because from what I can tell, this is the only forum with actionable information on the subject.  Just to share my experience for completeness

    I have a TaiChi 21 purchased on Sept 2013.  Everything was working normally including WiDi until the Windows 8.1 push in Nov 2013.  After that I frequently had the same problems previously reported with dual screen functionality and switching.  

    Specifically...when switching from tablet mode to notebook mode, the tablet screen remained active (responding to touch commands) but displaying only a black image while the notebook screen was active and working normally.  Careful inspection of the tablet screen from an acute angle demonstrated that there was indeed power to the tablet screen.  Various attempts at driver changes and ASUS utility updates (Close Lid, Screen Share, ATKACPI driver) did not seem to help.  

    After the Windows 8.1 update in April 2014, everything got worse.  Now if I booted into notebook mode and closed the lid to switch into tablet mode, the tablet screen did not power on at all.  If I used the TaiChi Home app to select Tablet mode, the notebook screen would change to 1024x768 and the tablet screen would still not power on.  If I booted into tablet mode and opened the lid later to switch to notebook mode, the tablet screen would remain on (black and responsive to touch commands) as described above.  This was with the following configuration

    Window 8.1 update (64-bit)

    Bios = 2.10

    ASUS Close Lid v1.1.8

    ASUS Taichi Home v 1.0.30

    ASUS Screen Share 1.0.26

    ASUS Taichi Display Control 1.0.13

    ATK Package 1.0.0030

    Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3412

    I sent my TaiChi back to Asus for "repair".  After two weeks of NO COMMUNICATION (so much for VIP service), they sent it back to me with a factory reset of the machine back to Windows 8.0 and the original ASUS drivers and utilities.  They didn't even bother to update the drivers, utilities, or even include a report.  Needless to say, I was NOT happy.  (Seriously - they can't image the machine with updated software).  I did discover that they had updated the BIOS 2.11 which was at the time not available on their website.    

    After hours of carefully updating all drivers and utilities in chronological release order, I am now working with the below configuration.

    Window 8.1 update (64-bit)

    Bios = 2.11

    ASUS Close Lid v1.1.8

    ASUS Taichi Home v 1.0.30

    ASUS Screen Share 1.0.26

    ASUS Taichi Display Control 1.0.13

    ATK Package 1.0.0030

    Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3412

    The only abnormality that I have noticed is that if I boot the machine in notebook mode when I come to the Windows logon screen the touch numeric pad come up.  It looks like both the tablet and notebook screen are active (tablet screen is black but accepts touch commands), but once I enter my PIN, the tablet screen does, truly switch OFF.  

    I have also had one day where when switching from tablet mode to notebook mode the cursor kept jumping or being pulled to the lower right corner of the screen.  This happened a lot after the Windows 8.1 update, but thankfully went away after a reboot and has not happened in the last week.

    Needless to say, I still don't trust this machine.  

    I have not even tried my WiDi for fear that it might mess something up.

    Anyone here with these current settings able to use their WiDi without messing up the dual screen functionality and switching?

    How do I cleanly revert my computer from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8?

    After updating to windows 8.1, the back screen of my Asus Taichi does not work properly.
