I don't have any other ideas other than a repair install over the top (finding media online) or rebuilding the pc. I'm truly sorry I have no other guidance. :-(

You have to repair reinstall or reinstall. You can't just take no action and expect it to be magically fixed. It won't be.

I am beyond angry. I purchased a brand new Hp with Windows 8.1 installed on it. I have had it less then a week. I noticed tonight that it needed to install updates. So I clicked shut down and install. It got stuck at 19%. This also happened with my new Hp laptop. So after a few minutes, I did a hard reset and it looked like it was going to work...until it didn't. I get the message that We couldnt complete the updates and we are undoing them do not turn off your computer. So I waited. And it restarted and nothing. I tried a hard reboot again. And I got the same result. After mulitple reboots I tried hitting F8. I was able to get into the safe mode and tried to un-install the updates that had failed. They would not un-install. So I had to reboot again. Then I tried to do a back up of my system. And that would not work. Thankfully I have an external hard drive that I back up on regularly and just backed up files a day ago. I was able to get into safe mode and move my files that I had not backed up and reset my computer. That makes me so angry. Why in the hello would Windows NOT fix this issue that has evidently been around since April? I am now back into my computer and I will fix it so that any updates are manual and not auto. I think it stinks that I had to go through all this just to get my PC back.....

Most of these problems are user problems. When your installing updates you don't turn your computer of you leave it and let it install. This is not Microsoft Fault it is yours for not following directions, so be mad at yourself Hope this helps and if you need any further assistance post and we will be glad to help you. TeresaBowman1965 did the right thing. Sometimes you are given the option to shutdown and install updates. That was the option he was given, and he followed instructions.
