This error may appear anytime a Windows Update fails. To investigate possible solutions, we need to start with the specific error code.

We can do this by viewing your update history.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), and tap or click Settings.
  2. Tap or click Change PC settings, and then Update and recovery.
  3. Tap or click View your update history.

View failed update error code.

Please post here with your error code, so that the Community can try to help guide you appropriately.

I opened a case since I have been dealing with this issue for a while. Mine does the "Couldn't complete the updates...". I just got off the phone with the Microsoft tech and her solution to fix the issue is for me to purchase Windows 8.1 and do an in place install.

    Are you kidding me?

I paid for Windows and MS pushed the upgrade to me, now I have to pay for it??

You can download the ISO file for WIndows 8.1 to do the install from their website so long as you have a valid key for Windows 8.0 or Windows 8.1. You have the option to save it your hard drive to install later.

That doesn't work because I only have a Windows 8 product key. I downloaded Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store. So when I try to install the Windows 8.1 it asks for a Windows 8.1 product key.

You shouldn't have to do this for a failed update, but unfortunately it is what it is.
