This error may appear anytime a Windows Update fails. To investigate possible solutions, we need to start with the specific error code.

We can do this by viewing your update history.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), and tap or click Settings.
  2. Tap or click Change PC settings, and then Update and recovery.
  3. Tap or click View your update history.

View failed update error code.

    No not solved. In Settings under Update and Security in the Windows Update section under Update Status it says the following.

    Updates are available

    2017-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4054517)

    Status: Awaiting restart

    Yet when I click Start button at left of Task Bar and go to Windows 10 Update Assistant it says Thank you for updating to the latest version of Windows 10. 

    The computer still automatically restarts to be able to update and says "We couldn't complete updates, undoing changes. Don't turn off the computer." And I have to log in again.

    Over the last few days, since 1-05-2018 my computer has tried and failed to complete this update

    Last failed install attempt on ‎1/‎7/‎2018 - 0x800f0845

    The update is called: 2018-01 Cumulative update for Windows 10 version x64 for x-64 based Systems

    (KB4056892) (5).

    It fails to install at 30% installed, after downloading apparently OK, when my computer suddenly shuts down and reboots, it is then locked with the Windows blue 'window' in the middle of the screen, (forever). I can fix it by rebooting, twice. The first time it comes up and locks with the same blue window as before, on the second reboot it says it is going to try repairs on the update. This goes on for a while and then it gives up and says it's going to undo the update. I can eventually reboot the computer once more and use it. Happens every time this updates tries to install.

    Help, what should I do to fix this???

    For Windows 8.1 now have the "we couldn't complete the updates undoing changes" problem.

    From the update history..

    Microsoft.NET Framework 4.7.1 for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64 (KB4033369)

    Solutions?
