This error may appear anytime a Windows Update fails. To investigate possible solutions, we need to start with the specific error code.

We can do this by viewing your update history.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), and tap or click Settings.
  2. Tap or click Change PC settings, and then Update and recovery.
  3. Tap or click View your update history.

View failed update error code.

    Found the issue... We Couldn't Update the Reserved System Partition. Microsoft tech is working on this remotely.

    1st level Microsoft support exhausted all options at their end today - Sun Sept 18. Windows build 1511 and new latest 1607 will not install on 1 out of 6 Windows 10 machines.

    Escalated to Microsoft Tier Level 2 support. I am scheduled for a callback tomorrow Mon Sept 19 - between 4:30pm to 6:00pm from Microsoft Tier Level 2 support.

    Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3194496).  Failed to install on 9/30, 10/1, and 10/2/2016.
