After many days and nights of struggle, and after trying many solutions offered here, I finally got through to someone on chat at Microsoft who arranged for me to talk to a live human -- who then took over my computer remotely and fixed it. He uninstalled then reinstalled Windows 8.1 There is now a desktop icon that is labled "reset" and another one called "windows" that he put there.  Now my updates install smoothly.

    Hi Ahmad,

Thank You for the update on the issue. The KB3048778 is not the error code, it is the Knowledge Base ID of the update in Windows 8.1 that you are trying to install.

To do so: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Installation status: Failed
