Error: We couldn’t complete the updates, Undoing changes. Don’t turn off your computer.

This error may appear anytime a Windows Update fails. To investigate possible solutions, we need to start with the specific error code.

We can do this by viewing your update history.

1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), and tap or click Settings.
2. Tap or click Change PC settings, and then Update and recovery.
3. Tap or click View your update history.

View failed update error code.

Hi, when I update windows 8.1 , this is the error code I get  KB3048778.

do I just wait for the undoing changes don't turn off your computer to finish?

After many days and nights of struggle, and after trying many solutions offered here, I finally got through to someone on chat at Microsoft who arranged for me to talk to a live human -- who then took over my computer remotely and fixed it. He uninstalled then reinstalled Windows 8.1 There is now a desktop icon that is labled "reset" and another one called "windows" that he put there.  Now my updates install smoothly.

here was my problem and how I fixed it

In my case, kb3000850 and 8 other updates were continually being installed and reverted.

  second point, stating kb3000850 is optional was not the case for me, it was listed as critical.

For those reasons I did not hide the update.

I read through many other posts related to kb3000850 and found that in some cases having Avast av possibly contributed to the failure(s).

I disabled the three Avast shields, activated Windows Defender. (I did not remove Avast).

I restarted the computer, the updates reinstalled and reverted again. I shutdown the computer again and on this restart all 9 updates installed.

I will leave Avast disabled until several more windows updates apply correctly and then decide whether I'm safe enough with Defender.

Hi My PC has tried to install update KB3048778 on some 6 occassions... each time failing and undoing the changes on restart. I hasve checked that I have no removable media in drives but it makes no difference. I have Norton 360 installed- is that likely to be the problem?
