Give Linux Mint a try. It is based on Ubuntu. I have installed on a few old XP laptops including an Acer Netbook. They are working much better than they ever did!

Other than Apple, what is the most viable OS competition to Windows? Linux? Based on my experiences with this update, I am ready and eager to switch to something that actually works. Thoughts?

@NH905, that is the most reasonable answer from level 2. Why cannot Microsoft publicly acknowledge this and put an end to users' agony and wasted time probably in the tens of thousands of hours. Till next month;)

In view update history error 80246007 shows up. Any ideas how to fix this? 0x80246007 WU_E_DM_NOTDOWNLOADED The update has not been downloaded. So you could try clearing SoftwareDistribution Or do some diagnosis and find out what is wrong before using hammers.

Actually the error is for update 2919355? Maybe you left out one digit? P.S. I tried every possible suggestion online in in every forum I could find. Nothing worked. I still get the same error. The computer sometimes locks up and I'd have to turn it off 2-3 times before it would boot back to the desktop.
