You didn't buy Windows 8 from Microsoft you bought from Gateway with your computer. and they are the ones responsible to see that it works Talk to Gateway they have to provide a way for you to get back to factory Specs. Hope this helps and if you need further assistance post and we will be glad to Help you.

For me , my system has 8.1 pro on it now and EVERYTHING WORKS PEFECTLY FINE, however if I try or let the system automatically install an update it fails and sends the system into the 3 hour try fail remove restart loop.

How will buying the same product I have now or buying a older obsolete version and installing updates to the older version to bring it up to where it is equal to what I have now going to solve the problem?  Either way it brings me back to where I am now.

Can anyone tell me how the 8.1 that I am being told to purchase or how 8.0 with all the updates are different i.e. better than the 8.1 that I already purchased?

It is unacceptable for me too - but it's either that or spend hours of the phone with Microsoft support with the hope to get it fixed? $100 is a lot less "money" than the amount of time I'm hearing people on the phone if you take into account my hourly rate. On top of that I'm not hearing any fixes other than a reinstall anyway I can't do that with the media I have supposedly.

I'm still thinking through what I want to do - spend the money or spend a bunch of time on the phone with Microsoft and maybe or maybe not get a fix. Again, I was able to install the update, I just now have dism restorehealth failure (with a bunch of Chinese in the log) due to that update. I guess I may do nothing until I get to the point that I really need restorehealth to do something for me. I don't use any antivirus software other than Windows Defender. I did have Norton at one point, but did a complete uninstall using their tool from their website. Maybe the dism failure is a bogus failure and all will be good. I still haven't done today's updates - so I'm hoping for a miraculous fix with today's updates once I get home, but I'm not expecting it.

$100 for a mandatory patch is an unacceptable resolution to me.

No, not unless to bought a Windows 8.1 full version and did not update through the store. You will have to start from scratch, installing whatever OS came on your computer than upgrade to 1 step at a time until you install Windows 8.1.1. Hope this helps and if you need further assistance post and we will be glad to Help you.

That's my beef!  I bought a new OEM Gateway with MS W 8.1 Pro Media Center already installed, settings are set (were set) on "update automatically",  all was fine until the system attempted to install a "required windows update" ...which failed and makes the system go into a 3 hour loop of installing, "sorry we cant do finish" "Uninstalling" "restarting"  "Installing updates"  "Sorry we cant finish".....freaking ground hog day.

Now I am being told that I have to go out and buy a version of Windows that is older than the one I have already purchased and install piece meal updates until I reach a point that is equal to the version I previously purchased....how will I know when I reach that point ..... when the system goes into ground hog day mode again!?

Seriously,   I purchased a product from Microsoft the product does not work as it should, what if anything is Microsoft doing to correct the problem?  Telling me to spend another $199 to purchase the same product that I already have and am having an issue with is not a solution!
