    Go to maintenance and refresh your computer. This will remove aps that are not compatible and preserve your files. Then you should be able to install your updates.

    @8jbh1, it is possible that earlier installs left Windows Update in a corrupted state.  In my case (Win 8.1 x64), I did the following before manually trying to install KB2919355.  All this may not work.  In the end, I had to escalate with Microsoft to get Win 8.1 install media and a new product key, do an in-place repair, prevent Windows Updates from running automatically, installing KB2919442 (the pre-req for KB2919355) and then the standalone version of KB2919355.

    * disable automatic Windows Updates

    * from admin prompt:

    sfc /scannow

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    * check status of Windows update image

    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    * reset Windows Update components

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

    * clean boot (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135)

    No, I couldn't get to the boot menu while it was booting. Pressing F12 didn't do anything.
