Being a new computer, I suggest you return it. We all know that Microsoft blew it big time with this update. To bad they wouldn't just own up to it, and admit it. One other possibility is to contact Microsoft directly, and request a disk. After a hard turn off, you may be able to boot off a disk.

Hi, just bought an Asus Transformer tablet with Win8. This morning (three days from new), Microsoft forced an update and now I have this message looping through and cannot access anything on the tablet to try and resolve as described in the thread. I have to switch it off eventually, what's going to happen to my device? Has this turned my new tablet into scrap? Will it ever perform properly again? Man, I should have stuck with Android.

Your PC, since it came with Windows 8.1 pre-installed, is probably still under warranty. I would pursue that route.

But I'm still stuck on the error screen. I can't even boot up into windows! Arg....

I'm sure you can - as long as you have your product key. That does S#ck that this happened to you. A computer that started with 8.1, should allow seamless updates! I would start from here. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads
