The 8.1 update KB2919355 failed without an error code. Just the statement "We couldn't complete the updates, Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer." This has happend numerous tikes in past 6 months. Also, if I choose not to automatically install updates, office apps don't work and system hangs. Please help ASAP

That would be good if they coincided. But the upgrade failures predate my Avast installation by many months.

I have a bunch of failed update packages Maybe your Avast uninstall didn't work completely. <eg> Check if they have a cleanup procedure? Most AV manufacturers seem to provide one on demand.
