    I have a Dell Inspiron 15 with core i7 running 8.1 for x64 based system

    My PC keeps trying to install updates then states: We couldn't complete the updates, Undoing changes. Don’t turn off your computer.

    Today it tried to install 83 updates, locked up my pc for 56 minutes then gave the same msg.

    I looked at the Update history. No failled updates listed for today (15 May) only one failled update listed on 14 May, Update windows 8.1 for x64 based systems (KB3054169)  error 8024000B

    I have business mtgs next week and can not have my pc locked up for an hour.

                 error 80240016

    Reply modeled on my previous one about a different code.

    Edit:  I'm not sure this thread has seen this particular code before.  Others have apparently.

    Google search for

        80240016 OR 0x80240016  site:microsoft.com

    About 2,170 results

    Otherwise, also mentioned in here, you can get a clue about its category from the old list of codes which has been kept by Support and never updated.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/938205?wa=wsignin1.0

    Edit:

    Actually I had to do a web search to find a cached copy of it.  The Support site was in a ridiculous redirect loop.  YMMV.

    Doing a Find in there for 80240016 finds

    <quote>

    0x80240016 WU_E_INSTALL_NOT_ALLOWED Operation tried to install while another installation was in progress

    <quote>

    If you really want help I suggest you start your own thread with your own details.

    Good luck

    Susan. I eventually ran the commands - both to 100% - but Restorehealth did not work. However, I restarted and exactly the same thing happened - it stuck on 17 (of 35) updates and I had to switch off and when it restarted again it "couldn't complete" so was undoing the updates.

    Now, please moderate on this. I purchased a new computer and your operating software in good faith and with good money. Both work at the moment but on current status without updates, as you say, I am prone to many problems. You do not know why this has happened and consequently a fix is almost beyond hope; more than this you expect your customers to spend hours trying to find answers. In almost any other business this would be totally unacceptable - so why is it ok for Microsoft ?

    Why is it not possible to provide me with another version of your software (with the updates) which will work and is proven to provide updates ? Or are we saying that all users of 8.1 have this problem ?

     You have advised that there is a proven risk it will not work properly in the future without updates, yet you have (via Dell) given me software that cannot be updated.

    I suppose I could return the PC to Dell under warranty - but it's not really their problem is it ?

    Whilst I agree with NH905 about Fixit Wizards, I think you are far from this solution and I guess it depends on the size of the problem.

    Can you propose a solution please, that does not involve me spending hours at my computer testing your "possible "solutions and somehow get me a working copy of the software; ie one that can accept updates
