8.1 install error 0xC1900101-0x40019 and 0x80070652

For all these wasted man-hours, microsoft must be awarded the "World's largest open source Employer".

Here is the fix for a HP Pavilion dm4 1041tx  with a AMD Radeon HD 5000 series graphics card.

It is the graphics card driver issues which was stopping the upgrade process midway.

Everything including compatibility test passed and went through till restart and than screen blacked out.

1. Uninstall the graphics card from the device manager and don't restart the system till the upgrade process restarts it, else windows will again re-install it.
2. Start the upgrade and start praying.
3. After the installation if you see the Microsoft driver for the graphics card you can update it from the device manager, will work fine and will automatically update to the latest AMD driver. No issues after the installation.

Mission accomplished after 6 installation and 3 downloads, got the start button which points to the windows 8 home page.

My 2014 resolution was to try again and attempt safe mode graphic driver load when in 'blank' screen 'failed state' of the 8.1 install.

I have a hunch it (the failure) is graphic card driver / Win 8.1 related on my HP envy but no one (hp/ms or user community) has provided confirmation or solution.

Purchased my Lenovo G700 laptop (W8) on 9/7/2013. Upgraded to W8.1 on 10/17/2013 with absolutely NO PROBLEMS! Fast forward to 12/15/2013 when I downloaded several (approx 40) MS updates. During the install of these updates my laptop froze up and would only  regain functionality with a clean restore back to W8. Since then- nothing. I have tried over ten times to update using everything I have learned from various internet spots. Sad thing is that when I purchased my laptop I wanted W7 IOS but Lenovo told me that Microsoft would only let Lenovo install W8 on the new units sold to saps like me. Go figure.

In the hopes of preventing anyone else expending this amount of time:

HP Envy 23, no external devices except wireless keyboard&mouse

1. Attempted 8.1 from MSDN ISO download and dvd burn. Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019
2. Attempted 8.1 from MSDN ISO download and dvd burn just because I didn't believe number 1. Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019
3. Attempted 8.1 from Microsoft store Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019
4. Attempted 8.1 from Microsoft store just because I didn't believe number 3 Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019
5. Read online that Task Manager, startup, disable all would work.    Attempted 8.1 from Microsoft store Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019
6. Read online that enabling security to admin group for Crypto directory.  Attempted 8.1 from Microsoft store Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019
7. Read online that ensuring drivers are all current.  MS update, HP update, physically clicked on each driver, update in Device manager, Attempted 8.1 from Microsoft store Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019
8. Read online that turning Firewall off, Attempted 8.1 from Microsoft store Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019
9. Woke up this morning and evidently Win 8.0 decided on its own to Attempted 8.1 from Microsoft store Result: 0xc1900101-0x40019

 

Good news: Fall back to 8.0 has been flawless with the exception of the need to reenter the network key.

 

Bad news: Still on 8.0

 

Based on, in every case, the upgraded machine can be: Accessed via admin share c$ from a network device and can NOT be remoted into and the local display is 'illuminated' but not responsive and dark black (BSOD), my GUESS is a screen / display driver is failing on first boot to 8.1

 

I've reviewed everything on the C: drive with the extension "log" and a date close to the install date/time without success of isolating exactly what is failing.

 

Hope no one else expends this much time.

10. "clean boot" (msconfig, hide all Microsoft, disable ALL remaining) per MS Knowledge base article, Result:0xc1900101-0x40019

May Windows 8.0 live forever.  ;)

Success, 8.1 ;)

A new year, new Intel HD 4000 graphics drivers and a success 8.1 installation from the Windows store.

S w e e t :-)

It's been fun, it's been real but it's not been real fun.

1. Right click This PC, PROPERTIES
2. Click device manager
3. Right click Display Adapters
4. If you have a Intel HD 4000 graphics device, right click, UPDATE DRIVERS

Let it search the internet for the drivers.  After a minute, it will begin a driver load and force a reboot.

At this point, following boot, you should be able to upgrade your HP Envy 23.

Note: It took over 2hrs on a mega fast Verizon Fios connection.  Numerous reboots.  Numerous HP logo's and some interesting messages presenting status of the Win 8.1 install.

All in all, a flawless install.

I try what you says and it works!!

I open Task Manager on my Windows 8.0 and see in the process section, find the "adobe updater" type of process and end task it. Then i click the downloaded Windows 8.1 app again and finally it installed!! =D

What driver version and date did you install. I up dated my driver to version 10.18.10.3379 dated 12/18.2013 and still no luck. My problem must be something else of which I have no clue!
