well that's super.  Just nine steps that 3/4 the computing world wont be able to accomplish....Awesome upgrade MS...        

I agree this is a widespread train wreck. I've spent 3+ hours first updating a brand new high-end laptop to even SEE 8.1 in the Store, then waiting for the massive 3.6 GB 8.1 download, then watching excruciatingly slow progress bar after slow progress bar during the update, only to have it crash during the "final setup" and wait even longer while it forced me to revert back to 8.0 without presenting any other options. It's been a hugely frustrating waste of time.

This is also a massive waste of internet bandwidth forcing people to start over from the beginning time and time again (as many here have reported doing). Why not offer to save the bloated 3.6 GB download and offer steps to run the update again? Why not offer 8.1 someplace obvious as a downloadable file--especially for those with multiple PC's to update? And why isn't it available through Windows Update the way SP1 for Windows 7 was? Microsoft has dumbed everything down to the point of absurdity with Win 8 which only creates more frustration when something goes wrong.

This is a horrifically bad customer experience. Windows 8 has been hugely unpopular and 8.1 was supposed to be Microsoft's chance to gain some customer loyalty back. This horrible update experience  certainly isn't the way to do it.

I'm done with Windows 8 and any new Microsoft anything. They've completely lost their way. I just ordered a Chromebook, I'll stick with Win7 on my older PCs, and Android works great on all my mobile devices. This new laptop, like many Win 8 PCs I'm told, is going back for a refund.

On the Stardock web site, there is another program just below the button you click to download Start8. If you click that button, a malware program called Qone8 downloads and installs. It substitutes itself for the home page on your browser. It looks a bit like the Google page, but inserts video ads. Yahoo Answers has good instructions for getting rid of it, but you have to uninstall your browser and run a scan with a good antivirus program to make it go away forever. I don't know why Stardock has thing thing, but it's really annoying.

Not just tablets are touch screen. Many people have touch screen monitors and laptops. Microsoft is just keeping up with technology. Windows 8 and 8.1 is essentially Windows 7 just with new user interface. It is designed to make it easier to work with touch screens not just tablets. Get over the fact of the old menu, it is just not efficient with new technology. Face the facts mobile device are taking over and desktop PC market is shrinking. I haven't had a desktop pc for 5 years now and most people I know don't have one anymore either. Windows 8 and 8.1 work great besides the upgrade from 8 to 8.1.

Good for you and you not having a PC.  too bad that most of the world (at work) still uses a PC.  Sure, they have laptops and tablets, but nothing can replace the good old 19-24" monitor, keyboard, and mouse fro a LOT of things.

MOST people at work do not have touch screens, and businesses are not going to S%$#can their current working ones just to get a "neat" feature of "swiping".

The "old" menus works perfectly fine for a work environment, and MS was stupid for at least not giving a option to keep one.

I deal with this at work every day ...

Them: "I cant possibly do my job without a tablet"..."It has to weigh less than a pound and run faster than my PC..."  "WHAT? this screen is too small...I cant see it...I am going to report you to the ADA..."

Me: do your required applications run on windows 8?

Them: "what do you mean...why do you hate new technology...why are you obstructing"

Me: "just saying, its probably not compatible with windows 8 since you bought this program in 1998 for DOS

Them: "I don't care, I need a tablet to do my job...its shiny"

You seem to have a lot of anger issues. Maybe you need to seek help. Also I said I don't have a desktop PC. I Do have a laptop that I use for home and work. It runs Windows 8.1 and it is not a touch screen. Windows 8 version of the start menu works perfectly fine with a mouse. No need of fancy swiping.

Most laptops and some tablets and smartphones can connect to external monitor or TV as a second screen. You can connect wireless keyboard to any computer (desktop or laptop),  to any tablet and to any smartphone. 

You seem to be focusing your frustration on the wrong company. By what you have said your problem is at work not with Windows 8. Your work upgrades to windows 8, but don't upgrade their other software. That's a clueless IT department.

Microsoft is just making their OS work cross platform. Which is a very smart move. Making an old start menu along with new start menu would use more of your computers resources. So, your old work computers would work even slower.
