Chrome and Firefox browsers not compatible with Windows 8.1 update

I have just installed the new windows 8.1 update today (18th October) and found that both chrome and firefox do not work. (I had the latest versions installed which worked fine with windows 8.) I've even tried installing chrome 4.1 beta and the "unstable" chrome 5... I've made sure that they (chrome and firefox) are 'allowed' through the firewall, but still can't get them to work. Both web browsers open and look like they're working, but when I try to open a website chrome says it can't connect to the internet and firefox just remains on the start page. I know my internet works fine as internet explorer works and so does the app store. Any help on this would be appreciated! Thank you

There's a solution by ianself on mozilla's support forum and it worked for me! It fixed both my chrome and firefox browsers.

  1. Type "cmd.exe" into Search and then right-click on Command Prompt****to select 'Run as administrator'
  2. Type "netsh winsock reset" into Command Prompt, and then press Enter
  3. Restart PC

"netsh winsock reset" is not working for me (I am an IT professional) IE11 or Chrome, both cannot connect to some of the websites ... Noticed famous websites (like YouTube, CNN, etc.) all work fine but less known websites throw Page Cannot be Displayed. When I open websites side by side on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 laptops on same network Windows 7 laptop opens these websites fine so it is not the connection but something else ... This is driving me nuts :-(

I've tried all solutions that i can get my hands on and nothing works permanently for me.  Tried the flushing DNS solution, tried the permanently entering the DNS into windows solution, installed Vendor drivers rather than using the 8.1 default drivers, dropped the reserved bandwith to 0% rather than the default usable 80%.  Im on cat5 internet and speed to the outside world gets slower everyday, though it might have been the cat 5 cable or adapter, so i switched to a N600 wireless dongle and the same. I also tried to reconfig my modem / router from scratch.  Seems like the only permanent solution i have found is to switch my modem / router to a different brand.  Looks like its the way that Win8.1 uses the DNS while doing online functions .....

This sux as it costed me heaps of time wasted and money from not being able to do my work.

In Australia according to the ACCC we are allowed to request a full refund and being able to claim compensation for all damages caused by a faulty product.  Funny how no one seems to have done anything to Microsoft after they have time and time again offered faulty products to the public.
