Chrome and Firefox browsers not compatible with Windows 8.1 update

I have just installed the new windows 8.1 update today (18th October) and found that both chrome and firefox do not work. (I had the latest versions installed which worked fine with windows 8.) I've even tried installing chrome 4.1 beta and the "unstable" chrome 5... I've made sure that they (chrome and firefox) are 'allowed' through the firewall, but still can't get them to work. Both web browsers open and look like they're working, but when I try to open a website chrome says it can't connect to the internet and firefox just remains on the start page. I know my internet works fine as internet explorer works and so does the app store. Any help on this would be appreciated! Thank you

There's a solution by ianself on mozilla's support forum and it worked for me! It fixed both my chrome and firefox browsers.

  1. Type "cmd.exe" into Search and then right-click on Command Prompt****to select 'Run as administrator'
  2. Type "netsh winsock reset" into Command Prompt, and then press Enter
  3. Restart PC

As I said once before and I see it everyday at work. Some machines came with 8.0 on them and people went to the store and got the 8.1 update and either it did a full fubar on the machine or alot of things no longer worked. This is because drivers needed that worked on 8.0 didnt work on 8.1 and the manufactor did release any 8.1 drivers yet (but most have by now). This also included drivers for network cards. The main thing I saw for no longer being able to get onto the internet again. Some manufacturers gave you directions on how to install new drivers prior to 8.1 upgrade and some even had a section to check if your machine has been approved for the upgrade. If everything was ok to begin with you would of gotten the upgrade from Microsoft directly in the monthly releases. But this seems to be a past issue which just needed some time to work it through all the different systems out there.

I've also seen alot of times were IE would just corrupt itself. No way no how was it getting on the internet again even though Firefox and Chrome had no problem. MSFixit did not work, resetting all the inet settings would not even help. The only recourse was to roll back IE to an earlier release by removing the the update for the newer version. No you cant just remove and  then re-install IE, its all part of the system and you have to roll back. And then after everything was fine, even another update to the newer version would still keep working.

The following commands work for me in most cases...

From the DOS command prompt, running under administrator permissions...

Type in... Most cases these will work for all browsers and solve your problem...

    netsh winsock reset

    netsh int ipv4 reset

    ipconfig /flushdns

    Additional things to try...

    netsh advfirewall reset

    netsh interface ipv4 reset

Be careful on regedit and use only if you feel comfy doing it.

On Win8 only if above commands fail...

    Open Regedit, look for

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nsi\

    {eb004a00-9b1a-11d4-9123-0050047759bc}\26

Right click on "26" key, choose "Permissions", add a check mark

on "Full control" for the everyone group,

    now repeat the netsh command.

    Also on Win 8.1

    Powershell and type in

    Set-NetIPInterface

         ref at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh826125.aspx

    Detailed Description of above...

The Set-NetIPInterface cmdlet modifies an IP interface, including Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), IPv6 neighbor discovery settings, router settings and Wake On LAN (WOL) settings.

If you do not specify any parameters, this cmdlet sets all of the IP interface properties on the computer, including virtual interfaces and loop back interfaces.

Its always good to have at least 2 browsers. IE you will always have. The others are Chrome and or Firefox. I use Firefox as my main, just because of the add ons that can be gotten,. Both have add ons to prevent pop ups, and I never see any pop ups or adds. Just getting the right ones to use is the question. I use NoScript and ABP. Using the default Block Pop Ups' settings in each browser will not work 100% as they have ways around this to fool this setting. If you continue to get pop ups then ya have yourself some malware that needs to be removed. Malware can disrupt your settings.

Another thing I run across more than once is when a person tries changing their AV software by removing the old then installing the new. Not all removals work the same and dont always clean up very well. Some settings are left behind that can block or hamper the internet settings when mixed with the new. You may have to go to that companies web site of the older one and look for a clean up utility to fully remove it and then re-install the new stuff. I've seen this on most of the free AV software out there and even so on Nortons, McAfee, etc. the paid ones. They also have their own removal tools. It just happens... :(

One last thing if things are still failing...

Open the command prompt again, under admin permissions and run CFS /scannow. This will check all your system files for corruption and either fix them or tell you there is some unfixable corruption which will require further steps.  If you find unfixable then a restore of the OS is the easiest way out of this problem after you backup your important stuff. Dont play games trying to fix those problems. You'll be up and running with all updates and all before you can fix the corruption.

Based on your response, you are much more sophisticated in your technological understanding of computers. I hope you have gotten your 8.1 straightened out at this time. Mine continues to work satisfactorily at this point in time. My only real issue is the manipulation of my Bookmarks.

Sorry for taking so long responding. I did not get the initial response for one reason or another. I trust all is well down under.

    Regards,

    Rick Stephenson
