Flight Sim X will not work on Windows 8.1

I have the official release of 8.1 now, downloaded last night and FSX still does not work.

I can get through the menus but when I click to fly now, it drops me back to the desktop and gives me a fatal error.

I have tried:

 1. A system restore back to windows 8, followed by the 8.1 upgrade.

 2. Fresh install of FSX with no add-ons

 3. Tried 'run as admin' and all different compatibility modes.

It still does not work...FS2004 works great. FSX did work in Windows 8.0 fine.

This needs to be fixed, otherwise Microsoft will have killed FSX.

Alright, after days of uninstalling and reinstalling I figured out something, even though it is not ideal you can roll back your driver to the previous installed driver. Hit **windows + x,**click on Device Manager find Display Adapters and click on it.  Double click on the graphics card name. Select Driver and then select Roll Back Driver. It worked for me, although it is not ideal it works!

This is why people use Apple !!. I use Windows for Games and messing about but Mac for my serious work. I have FSX now in the bin. The first purchased copy I had to call a number that was in Madrid and costs an arm and a leg to call and they make you wait for ages. I bought a NEW copy of the same with a different registration number and now this won't load into 8.1. Macintosh have a number you can call for any problems and they walk you through it without a glitch, that's why I use it for business. Windows is pushing out operating systems before they even know how they have constructed them.

    Hi Philip,

    ·         Which version of Microsoft Flight Simulator X are you using?

According to Windows 8.1 compatibility center. Microsoft Flight Simulator X version 10 is compatable with Windows 8.1. Refer this link. You may face this issue if graphic card drivers is not updated.

I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the Graphic card drivers and check.

Follow these steps to update the drivers for Graphic card. You may also check for drivers using Windows Update. If issue still persist download drivers from computer manufacture.

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

    1. Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. In Device Manager, locate the device you want to update, and then double-click the device name.
    3. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver and follow the instructions.

If Windows Update can't find a driver for your device, check the device manufacturer's website. Refer these links and check if it helps:

You may also contact Microsoft Flight Simulator support and check:

I could NOT get FSX deluxe to work on my 8.1. It would start, but when I clicked "fly now", the program would crash... until I did this.. uninstall FSX, and the excel package, and all files associated, then reinstall FSX, then run the excel disk, THEN..  1, open FSX 2.. go to settings 3.. click customize 4.. I picked the highest screen resolution 5..push target frame rate to unlimited 6.. check beside Anti-aliasing 7.. global texture to MAXIMUM 8.. CHECK BESIDE "PREVIEW DIRECT X 10" and BAM, I HAVE NO PROBLEMS.. I'm excited to share this, as it should solve your problems getting this GREAT program to work.. I will copy, and paste this to the forums of fellow simmers having this issue, so you will probably see this post again, as I want to get the word out on the fix.. you too, please spread the word.. thank you..
