Flight Sim X will not work on Windows 8.1

I have the official release of 8.1 now, downloaded last night and FSX still does not work.

I can get through the menus but when I click to fly now, it drops me back to the desktop and gives me a fatal error.

I have tried:

 1. A system restore back to windows 8, followed by the 8.1 upgrade.

 2. Fresh install of FSX with no add-ons

 3. Tried 'run as admin' and all different compatibility modes.

It still does not work...FS2004 works great. FSX did work in Windows 8.0 fine.

This needs to be fixed, otherwise Microsoft will have killed FSX.

I completely understand, because I use my system for gaming ONLY, so what you say makes complete sense (using a separate rig for FSX). I have used a separate computer for gaming for many years, so I tend to forget that it may not be ideal for others to 'monkey' around with things.  Nothing on my game rig is mission critical.

I agree with you that this problem should be addressed by professionals. That would be the proper thing to do.

    Be well.

I finally got my FSX to run most of the time on my Win 8.1 64 bit machine.  It required a full deletion and reinstall of FSX and all the addons.  I do experience regular crashes when going from windowed to non windowed mode and anytime I spend more than a few minutes tweaking settings.  Graphics drivers are upto date, direct X 10 checked, win 8 comp checked... I want to get the plug 777 but am hesitant due to crashes.  I'm going to try a couple tweaks suggested here and see if the help.

I have an HP and applied some of the advice from Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925722/en-us) and am now running flight simulator.

As I am running a new computer I download all the updates. Even when it said I had all the updates I search for more updates until finally I had all the updates, This included a new driver from NVIVIA.

Then I installed Flight Sim X first but opened the files on the disc and ignored the one that automatically checks to see if you have the right driver. Then I installed Flight Acceleration. After the last install I was able to use the highest settings with no problems. My fingers are crossed that it will keep running as it should. For those that tried to install before the updates I would try to purge all the flight sim folders. Hope this helps .....

    BullGod

Had FSX for many years on desktop and decided today to install on my 8.1 laptop with SP 1 and SP2. Kept crashing.

Dropped your file in FSX directory and it seems to be stable!

    Thank you

One thing though, I cant get into true Fullscreen now. Still have bar along the top but stability is main thing.

    Sincere thanks from Wales

Credit needs to go to PhilipAnderson_1977. He brought up the need for the alternate UIAutomationCore.dll.  I just gathered the English version and typed out the info to share what worked for me with everyone.

    :-)

    Glad it is working!
