Flight Sim X will not work on Windows 8.1

I have the official release of 8.1 now, downloaded last night and FSX still does not work.

I can get through the menus but when I click to fly now, it drops me back to the desktop and gives me a fatal error.

I have tried:

 1. A system restore back to windows 8, followed by the 8.1 upgrade.

 2. Fresh install of FSX with no add-ons

 3. Tried 'run as admin' and all different compatibility modes.

It still does not work...FS2004 works great. FSX did work in Windows 8.0 fine.

This needs to be fixed, otherwise Microsoft will have killed FSX.

    All of the suggested fixes have not worked for me.  After 8.1 FSX worked fine for awhile... then creaping crashes until finally would not free flight at all.  *sigh*

    I am also experiencing a similar problem after purchasing a new computer with Windows 8.1 as the operating system. All other programs I employ - including some vintage ones - work flawlessly. Ironically, only a Microsoft product - FSX - is troubling.

    FSX runs for some time then crashes, generally after opening the menu. I will now attempt to install the UiAutomation Core noted above and see how that works. We shall see.

    I too am a bit mystified by the notion advanced here that it's somehow acceptable for Microsoft to serially change its operating system then callously accept the notion that it's own software programs, now a few years old but still on the market, don't operate properly in Windows. Nor should a customer be expected to tinker with his equipment and software to rectify this. But it looks as if the public has come to expect this.

    With this said, it's good to see that the folks here are helpful in trying - trying - to find a solution.

    It IS now resolved. 

    I went out and bought a refurbished Windows XP PC - and have now re-installed it on that instead.

    Naturally there were problems; I'd reinstalled it so many times on my main PC that the auto registration wouldn't work - nor did the request for a new ID when I said it was on 2 machines (not allowed it seems!) 

    I had to phone in (another slice of my life that I will never recover). At the end of the call, the service assistant asked if I'd take part in a survey - not sure they'd like the response.
