It's now a month since the problem was reported - just not good enough Microsoft!
Flight Sim X will not work on Windows 8.1
I have the official release of 8.1 now, downloaded last night and FSX still does not work.
I can get through the menus but when I click to fly now, it drops me back to the desktop and gives me a fatal error.
I have tried:
1. A system restore back to windows 8, followed by the 8.1 upgrade.
2. Fresh install of FSX with no add-ons
3. Tried 'run as admin' and all different compatibility modes.
It still does not work...FS2004 works great. FSX did work in Windows 8.0 fine.
This needs to be fixed, otherwise Microsoft will have killed FSX.

2013-10-21T18:12:36+00:00 Samsung has yet to release any 8.1 drivers or given me any timeline as of today (Oct 21, 2013) for when they will release them. I think the video card driver is the culprit.

2013-10-21T18:11:30+00:00 I think it's definitely a video card driver issue. A lot of my other programs were acting similar. Hopefully Samsung will release some dedicated Windows 8.1 drivers for my computer. Until then, I just did a factory system restore back to Windows 8.0.
Hopefully this works itself out, I did really like 8.1.
Check with your computer manufacturer and see if they're offering any drivers. That'll be my plan. Getting sick of reinstalls.

2013-10-20T19:31:22+00:00 Hi Philip,
I did the same. Upgraded my desktop PC yesterday to windows 8.1 from windows 8 (fsx + pmdg 777 worked perfectly).
Now my fsx crashes. Using menus -> crash, using PMDG 777 -> crash, using full screen (5 screens for me) -> crash ...
If it can be helpful, we are not alone, most of new windows 8.1 users can not play FSX anymore. Some of them has uninstalled FSX then a full fresh install with same issues.
I ve updated my video card driver, same issues.
I ve tried to get back to windows 8. Impossible. i ve tried to use a windows 8 backup but windows 8.1 doesn't accept to downgrade from a windows 8 backup. If anyone knows how to do so, i will really appreciate.
Windows 8.1 seems to be a trap. I was about to upgrade my laptop too, i will wait.
I hope this is only a graphic driver issue if not, indeed, windows 8.1 will have kill FSX (I'm asking myself if Windows will refund FSX + add ons lol )

2013-10-19T07:33:44+00:00 Hi Philip,
· Which version of Microsoft Flight Simulator X are you using?
According to Windows 8.1 compatibility center. Microsoft Flight Simulator X version 10 is compatable with Windows 8.1. Refer this link. You may face this issue if graphic card drivers is not updated.
I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the Graphic card drivers and check.
Follow these steps to update the drivers for Graphic card. You may also check for drivers using Windows Update. If issue still persist download drivers from computer manufacture.
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
- Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
- In Device Manager, locate the device you want to update, and then double-click the device name.
- Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver and follow the instructions.
If Windows Update can't find a driver for your device, check the device manufacturer's website. Refer these links and check if it helps:
