Windows 8.1 HDMI output not working at all

Hello,

I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8, which I had never tried before (so I am new to this). I updated to 8.1 the other day, and afterwards I tried connecting the laptop to a brand new LG HD TV through the HDMI ports. I opened the "Project" menu and selected "Duplicate", and while I see something change on my laptop screen (it flickers, and the resolution/colours change), the TV picks up no signal.

The HDMI port on the TV is working correctly (tried it with another device), and so is the HDMI cable. There is some sort of connection happening because the TV enables the HDMI input only when something is detected on the other side of the cable.

I have seen that it might be a known issue with Windows 8.1, but I can't find a solution anywhere. My laptop has an integrated Intel GPU as well as an nVidia GeForce 740M, and I thought perhaps the problem was that it uses the Intel card as a standard, only switching to the nVidia when necessary, but the HDMI is "controlled" by the nVidia. So I've tried disabling the integrated GPU (to no avail - it just switches to the Microsoft Basic one rather than to the better card - this has been checked through dxdiag), as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the nVidia drivers (which were up to date to begin with). I have checked the BIOS to see if I could change the priorities, but there was no option like I see on my Windows 7 desktop.

Is there anything else I can try? It seems really silly to me that I cannot use the HDMI output at all!

Thank you for the updates.

Since the issue persists, you may try the following steps and check:

Method 1:

Please follow the steps given below to uninstall the display driver.

a) Press Windows key + X key when you are at desktop.

b) Select Device Manager.

c) Find and double-click Display driver from the left panel to uninstall.****d) Right-click the device, and click Uninstall.

e) Windows will prompt you to confirm the device’s removal. Click OK to remove the driver.

f) After the uninstallation is complete, reboot your computer.

After you have successfully uninstalled the driver, please go to the computer manufacturer’s website, download the Windows 8.1 display driver for NVidia and check.

Method 2:

You may also check with LG support to see if you need to install any firmware updates for the TV.

You may also try running the Windows Updates and install all the available updates including the optional driver and firmware updates.

Did the system restore, it did the trick. This is with a Windows 8.1 computer. I can't find the specific upgrade that did this, but it was an automatic upgrade I did on september 9. There was nothing else done this day. other than "Windows Update", so that IS the problem. I hope this helps anyone!

Another solution I have found that

Some graphics cards have their HDMI port a little loose (cant observe).

So put your HDMI plug very tightly in the GDs HDMI port it will

100% work all time.

I don't get HDMI output from my motherboard in windows 8.1 and High Definition Audio Device is marked yellow in device manager, HDMI icon is on and not dimmed in my TV input panel but there is no signal neither audio nor video

Well, I just bought a new Vaio Flip PC due to the fact that it's the only hybrid with a discrete graphics card. When upgrading to windows 8.1 pro and installing everything perfect I have ran into the issue as well, and have other 40 hrs into trying to fix this with no avail. What I have found is this thus far:

The external audio drops when switching from dual display to single display and then back.

Restarting sometimes (30%) will restore for one cycle and repeat to the drop

The external audio device disappears even when set as default and show Disabled/Disconnected is checked

When checking the High Definition Audio Controller Event log, when the audio does work it states successful load of some AMD audio driver and the Processor Components are Intel and NVidia

When Audio isn't working then the Intel HD Graphic GPU performs horribly

Nvidia Discrete Card isn't available to most programs as preferred

I'm not saying everything is all one issue but it is all the things not running right. From what I have found researching this, it sounds like there is a compatibility issue between the Intel HD Graphics driver and Windows 8.1. I read somewhere that it is suspected that Windows 8.1 when updated forces an install of an AMD Generic Audio Driver and then when attempted to uninstall and reinstall it continues thinking that it needs the AMD Driver and forces the install over the correct Intel driver.

I don't know if that is true or not as that is where it is starting to go over my level of knowledge.

I've also heard that this is now just a Sony Issue due to the Vaio needs for its own proprietary driver.

So, if anyone has found a resolution to this I could use the assistance.
Well, here is my update to everything that I have learned thus far. Rolling back to 8 then going to 8.1 with extreme manual install update precautions doesn't fix a thing. The issue is an Intel APU Driver issue with Windows 8.1. The issue is caused by Microsoft and has nothing to do with hardware what so ever. What I have learned as well; when I uninstalled the Intel WiDi Program, my hdmi audio out and 2nd Display functionality increased from a 30% functional rate to about a 60% functional rate. Now, the Intel embedded GPU performance is absolutely horrible but it at least works more often than not. At this moment all I know we can do is sit back and wait for Microsoft to accept responsibility for the issue and then choose to put some engineers on the task to resolving the issue.
