Windows 8.1 HDMI output not working at all

Hello, 

I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8, which I had never tried before (so I am new to this). I updated to 8.1 the other day, and afterwards I tried connecting the laptop to a brand new LG HD TV through the HDMI ports. I opened the "Project" menu and selected "Duplicate", and while I see something change on my laptop screen (it flickers, and the resolution/colours change), the TV picks up no signal.

The HDMI port on the TV is working correctly (tried it with another device), and so is the HDMI cable. There is some sort of connection happening because the TV enables the HDMI input only when something is detected on the other side of the cable.

I have seen that it might be a known issue with Windows 8.1, but I can't find a solution anywhere. My laptop has an integrated Intel GPU as well as an nVidia GeForce 740M, and I thought perhaps the problem was that it uses the Intel card as a standard, only switching to the nVidia when necessary, but the HDMI is "controlled" by the nVidia. So I've tried disabling the integrated GPU (to no avail - it just switches to the Microsoft Basic one rather than to the better card - this has been checked through dxdiag), as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the nVidia drivers (which were up to date to begin with). I have checked the BIOS to see if I could change the priorities, but there was no option like I see on my Windows 7 desktop.

Is there anything else I can try? It seems really silly to me that I cannot use the HDMI output at all!

Thank you for the updates.

Since the issue persists, you may try the following steps and check:

Method 1:

Please follow the steps given below to uninstall the display driver.

a) Press Windows key + X key when you are at desktop.

b) Select Device Manager.

c) Find and double-click Display driver from the left panel to uninstall.****d) Right-click the device, and click Uninstall.

e) Windows will prompt you to confirm the device’s removal. Click OK to remove the driver.

f) After the uninstallation is complete, reboot your computer.

After you have successfully uninstalled the driver, please go to the computer manufacturer’s website, download the Windows 8.1 display driver for NVidia and check.

Method 2:

You may also check with LG support to see if you need to install any firmware updates for the TV.

You may also try running the Windows Updates and install all the available updates including the optional driver and firmware updates.

Did the system restore, it did the trick. This is with a Windows 8.1 computer. I can't find the specific upgrade that did this, but it was an automatic upgrade I did on september 9. There was nothing else done this day. other than "Windows Update", so that IS the problem. I hope this helps anyone!

Thanks bro..

Another solution I have found that 

Some graphics cards have their HDMI port a little loose (cant observe).

So put your HDMI plug very tightly in the GDs HDMI port it will 

100% work all time.

    This happened to me too, from one day to another. It was working fine under Windows 8.1, until an update I did on september 8 or 9, after that the HDMI stopped working. I have an Alienware 14 (mid 2013 model). 

    So far, I've tried:

    1. Using a brand new HDMI cable
    2. Uninstall and install Intel HD 4600 Graphics Driver
    3. Uninstall and install NVidia Gefore 765M Driver
    4. Using the "detect" option in Screen Resolution
    5. Using NVidia's "control panel"
    6. Updrading BIOS driver

    Nothing has worked. It's like if the HDMI port didn't exist at all,  and "screen resolution" is trying to falsely detect a VGA monitor, I spent around 6 hours yesterday trying to resolve this.

    The only thing left for me to do is a system resotre before that update.

    I have 5 different laptops that worked just fine with any tv with an hdmi port on it that now when I tried on our same 4 different brand tvs with all of the same hdmi cords that were working just fine the night before & also tried with 4 brand new hdmi cords the laptops hdmi ports are not working (being recognized) just the same as everyone here's complaints. It happened over night when we turned on our laptops and Microsoft had an update that we all did. I called Microsoft and was on the phone with 5 different Reps and over 2 hours. Only the last Rep even tried to really help & said he was aware of the problem but was going to have to escalate it and have a higher up Rep call me back the next day. It was an actual phone appointment set for 12 noon the next day. NO ONE EVER CALLED ME BACK. SUPRISE! SUPRISE! So it is not only on the new windows 8 folks.  3 of our laptops have windows 7 and 2 have Vista. There are over 12,000 people on one webpage alone complaining about this. It's all over the internet. Unfortunately some people that don't know much about pcs or didn't know when exactly to pin point when it happened actually spent money trying to get it fixed with tv repairs and pc repairs and are still having the same problem. We had NO PROBLEMS what so ever till we did the MS windows update and now none of them will work hooked up to the tvs through the hdmi ports & dvd players and game systems all work fine with every one of the tvs still, so IT IS the laptops all at the same time that all had the same MS windows update installed automatically. Nothing else was installed or done to these laptops, JUST the MS update. COME ON MS, SENT OUT A FIX TO US ALL. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. After this I too will probably never by MS again unless they announce their boo, boo and/or just do something pretty quick.
