Ok so here are the system specs

After the last update and restart. I am unable to use Windows update.

I have tried the troubleshooting steps but the problem still exists.

SFC returns no problem at all.

Problem occurring for updates KB2936068 and KB2919355

Using their standalone installer isn't working either.

Hi Jaxx,

Microsoft has issued a fix for your error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2969339

After you install it, the rest of the updates should download automatically.

    Hi Jaxx,

Not having much luck are you.

There's a possibility the following may work (did for somebody else with the same problem).

    1. Right click the Start button and go to Control Panel.
    2. If you have the Category view, change it to "Small icons" top right and then click the link to Troubleshooting.
    3. In the next menu, click the link to "View All" top left.
    4. At the bottom of the list, you'll find the Windows Update troubleshooter.

If you run that, it should fix the problem.

If it doesn't, Microsoft has just published a new troubleshooting article which might help: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/install-latest-update-windows-8-1

    Hello all and especially Xircal,

WinUpdate8.1 (KB...712) Finally installed automatically. Xircal had warned me the other day about not "resetting" my PC because MS was coming out with a "fix" according to this week's InfoWorld. Lo and Behold the fixed update installed itself.

FYI though, I had prevented MalWareBytes Premium from running with Windows, and was notified about rebooting from the Win8.1 menu screen - whereas I run Stardock's Start8 desktop. It is very unfortunate that many are still having problems with this update. Last week after 18 install failures, MS Tech support tried everything remotely (most of which I had already done) and then talked me into MS Assure with 1 year TS for a paltry $149. After stewing overnight, I successfully cancelled the charge the next day thinking "why should I have to pay for a bungled MS mistake".

This debacle has restored my complete lack of confidence in MS who care little about the average consumer and only about the bottom line. With every version of Windows since the 90's on almost 20 PCs, I draw closer and closer to Macs, Linux Ubuntu, Chrome, and any other OS rather than one from MS!

    You're welcome, Bob.

I'd advise you to create a System Image now which can be used to restore your machine to the way it is right now complete with all your personal data, apps, settings and of course, the infamous 8.1 Update.

To create one, you need an external USB hard drive with at least 60GB of free space. If you haven't got one, then buy one with around 500GB of storage because unlike a Recovery drive, you can use the rest of the space for your own files, movies, photos etc.

The system image creation process is very simple as follows.

    1. Right click the Start button and go to Control Panel. If you have the Category view, change it to "Small icons" via the link top right.
    2. Next, click "File History". In the bottom left hand corner of that, you'll see a link to "System image backup". Insert your external hard drive and then click that.
    3. Windows will detect it in the next menu and you'll get the option to include the EFI partition which you should accept.
    4. After that, the process to create the backup will begin and usually takes about 20 minutes.

A system image differs from a Refresh or a Reset in that the computer will be restored to the state it was in when you created it. You can make subsequent backups in the same way and a new backup will overwrite the old one.

Here's a screenshot of the link location.

In the event you want to restore to the System Image, hit Windows key + i to open the Charms and click "Change PC Settings".

Click Update and Recovery to go to the next menu and then click Recovery.

The bottom of the three options called Advanced startup which I've ringed in red in tthe screenshot is the menu you want.

When you click the "Restart now" button, the computer reboots to a light blue screen with a number of options on it. Click "Troubleshooting" to go to the next menu.

Next, click "Advanced Startup" followed by "Restore to System Image".

Type your Administrator password in the next screen after which the process is more or less automatic. You'll be asked to confirm you want to reformat at some point after which the System Image will be installed and you'll be back to where you are now.

I went through this whole process myself a couple of weeks ago so I know how the procedure works.
