If you're running Win 10, then right click on the Windows symbol bottom left corner, and click 'Control Panel' . Now click 'Troubleshooting' . Click 'Hardware and sound' . Click 'Background Intelligence Transfer Service' , then click 'Next' .
Now go back to Control Panel and click 'System and Security' . Click 'Windows Update' and click '
Next' .
That oughta do it.
I guess I should have said that I'm running windows 8.1, and am trying to update windows 10. So I can download 10 thankyou.
OK.....this is a thread about service registration missing or corrupt, but I can help with that, I think.

If the upgrade doesn't work, download the Media Creation Tool at the bottom of the page, run it to download a copy of Win 10, put it on a usb stick and click run.exe. when you're prompted about what to do with the inserted drive.
Here is the DEFINITIVE answer... IF you have a backup of your files PRIOR to when you had this problem, on any media (USB, disk, or cloud), you go to "backup and restore" in "control panel", then click on "restore my files"... choose the option "restore folders"... the click on "backup of :C"... then "users"... then "(your name)"... then choose "AppData".... "add"... then "restore"..... and voila.... your update will work again (did so myself).
