Service registration is missing or corrupt

I had just tried microsoft update and when nothing happened I used the "NET STOP WUAUSERV to stop it (as just closing does not work until I do it from task manager)   then this appeared in the window from microsoft:

The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running:

·                         Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer)

·                         Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)

·                         Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed)

To make sure these services are running:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click Properties.
10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.

I followed the procedure and found that "service status showed stopped but the rest were as they should be. Also note that you do not have to click on properites as you are already there when you double click on any of the services. I then restarted with the WUAUCLT /DETECTNOW and low and behold it has been downloading the updates in the background.  They do not show up in the check your recent updates but if you go to Add and remove programs in control panel and check show updates they will appear.  I think the trick was to stop the express or custom update using the NET STOP WUAUSERV then do the restart with WUAUCLT /DETECTNOW  after I got out of services. (note that there is a space between  wuauclt and /detectnow. and that it sometimes takes a while before the window that is showing it stopping actually closes. The first time I did it it took about 2 minutes before the blinking underscores worked there away accross the box the the window closed, Since then it is down to about 5 seconds.

I too have experienced this issue many times.  I always spend a vast amount of time trying to work a solution, today though its time to put some comments to microsoft to resolve this issue.  I am not a lone voice with a single issue, this is clearly related to demise of xp in a few months from now and MS  don't give a tinkers that we can't update.  I 've tried all the fixits, tips tricks, dot net etc. No resolution.  Microsoft are you listening, respond with a fix.

I recently have re-built 2 machines from fresh using the Dell Win XP - SP3 OEM disk and when going to update it just runs and runs and never actually seems to find anything. I have set Windows update for a certain time and that doesnt kick in either.

 

I have ensured that both the Automatic Updates & the BITS service are both running again i noticed a Fix-It solution from http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/?wa=wsignin1.0 and when installing this it required .NET frameworks 2 which i installed for it to run. When the Fix-It tool ran through it found errors and fixed some bar the 1 and this was shows as 0x80070005 Service registration is missing or corrupt. Thus now landing me to this page.

 

Both machines are doing the same... Anyone have any ideas much appriciated.

Reg "Corupt" has got me too.

Their ending support on XP in April http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/endofsupport.aspx

..,looks like their shutting the gates early..

They wont be happy until they've forced everyone into Win8. Its impossible to get xp to run right anymore.

Harder to find drivers than ever before too.They've destroyed the web. I wish I could say Ive seen revolts for less than this but i havent...In less than 5 years the internet will be worthless, unless the people are brainless idiots./
