From recently I can't update windows and I ran MS Fix it Center and it shows that service registration is missing or corrupt.

I agree with you. Seems like issues are around to force you to upgrade.

I think there is more than this issue here that Microsoft need to take a deep look into. Regardless of support for XP running out on April 8th 2014 like every web page tells you. There customers on XP still need to be able to download and install all updates that had been available up to that point. Windows update OR Microsoft Update as it is now classed as on some occasions should still work seemingly in my book. I have never had to do any fix before up until these new installs recently that I have done over the past 2-3 weeks.

I have built 3 machines all activated with their own COA licence key. I built one machine by making a copy of the Windows XP SP2 disk and injecting SP3 into it, this came from an official disk and this was still causing an issue. The other machines were an XP Dell SP3 version and a 64BIT version all doing the same... I'm lost with ideas.

I have come to the conclusion now, I have put the base build on and that its a known issue with windows update, hoping that Microsoft does a general fix for it, doubt this is going to happen now... Some of the machines I have built are fairly old ones and with all the updates on would run slow anyway so I'm not going to concern myself much about them.

But this does need to be looked into, I think higher up rather than trying to get work around, something has changed and its not our media!

Hi Paola, my 2 Windows XP Computer and Laptop have the same problem.

Things went funny after the October Update when my computer started hanging.

November didn't show any problems after I switched off the Internet and Antivirus.

During November I noticed that program svchost.exe  SYSTEM was running 99% CPU intermittently.

This month December there waere NO Updates.

    Cheers

    Hi,

It did not work for me. Windows update just keeps running without showing me anything.

Fix it gives me the following error:

    Windows Update Publisher details

    Issues found

Service registration is missing or corrupt                 Service registration is missing or corrupt        Not fixed

                                                                                                   Reset service registration                                    Succeeded

Hi, I have the same problem as jmlsr59.

I am going around in circles.

Tried different versions of Fix It.

This is what it says: SERVICE REGISTRATION IS MISSING OR CORRUPTED.

    Hi Wilbert,

    Please do the following.

Go to Start, Run and then type or copy/paste the following command in bold type and click OK: services.msc

(if you don't have "Run" on the Start menu, hit Windows key + R instead).

In the list of Services, can you see "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" or "BITS"?

If it's there, double click it and in the General tab, click the Start button. Does it start?

If it's nowhere to be seen, follow instructions in this thread:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/windows-xp-update-doesnt-work-how-to-stop-office/a059c47b-e8ad-46c6-8278-ae143feead7c
