I posted information for the benefit of Shadow. He is the one who wants XP and is talking about getting a 3TB drive.

Did you even bother to understand why I posted what I did?

Because you do want XP, stick to the 2 TB drives with NO special drivers or downloads. You can still make four 500 GB partitions of it... It best to put that internally and hook it up to the SATA cables... IDE drives are limited to 750 GB and much slower even at 7200 RPM, I make them external with no fuss or muss. You wont notice the differnce then. Then there are a lot of 3½-inch form factor enclosures for them. I use I/O Magic  for the slimmer  Seagates and StarTech for WD of mine as one way to ID which manufacturer they are. Some of those are limited to 2 TB as well. Then it comes back to hardware, MY speciality, what goes where sort of thing and WHY? Only a network server should be 2 TB or larger!!! Using a 2TB drive to put 100 GB or less wears out the drive as wasting the drive, and too much wears it out sooner The drives are good when half full and the empty half is so you do not have much else big on it minus 15% to defragment it, YOU have to factor in that 1 TB is 2^30th power not 1 x 10^12 power! If you don't, you will partition it wrong. YOU need the calculator to figure that out in megabytes to get it right. YOU only can partition in increments of 8 MB as indicated by its smallest partition, Cluster size at default for 2 TB drive at 4096 bytes per  cluster, I go 2048 bytes for less than 1TB.

Now you are understanding where I am at. I have been studing DATA processing and computers since I got my 30-inch K&E slide rule from my dad in 1964 with four digit presision when I was in eleventh grade and once studied how to use the 'Chinese or Japanese Sorban' (The abicus to us English speaking people), and a Math Major when I left high school, I knew Trantenberg MATH as how I know computers work in those days by adding and subtracting only and proved that to my computer teachers on the IBM 402 adding machine and its 514 summary card punch machine that multiplying is a series of additions and division is a series of subtractions... That was in 1968. If you read all my comments, I went to school and college for learning DATA Processing and that carried over in how I can hand a very large spread sheet using the TI-99/4 at the time with 12 K of memory and two cassettes, as to do my inventory of my 1500 doll collection! Later on floppy disks with the same TI-99/4 home computer. I did it as to sort all 1500 names as in a bach sort. Even later on the Commodore C-128 at twice the speed in 80 column mode using somewhat assembly language for speed. I have been working with computers and calculators since they went smaller. I even did my security posts payroll flawlessly for three times before I told my boss HE is not paying me to do it by asking for a raise of 50¢ more per hour, as he refused so I refused to do IT, that was in 1988. I got a better job after that, my wife got me in her father's store as as prerequsite in legally marrying her in 1988 after being with her for seven years earlier. I under stood what his accountant was doing keeping tract of the money. I could do it, but I was not a CPA I had all the math to do it three times over right, but he wanted to slant it by losing money to be in business.. you know it is legal and I wasn't. Also add to my credentials, I can do minor repairs in electronics. as on Calculators, and I made more money by it and setting up my customers TV after I sold it to them in Olympic Sales Company and taught everyone including TI and a college professor HOW to use a four function eight digit calculator as a scientific one! I even showed the Vise President of Northrop Aircraft company how I cleaned my TI-PC100A thermal printer by what it did when it actually printed his initials instead of mine on the magnetic card. As being a genius himself as my dad who taught me the third 'R' I astounded him by though my older brother what I won an math contest and the teacher at the time HOW I fixed a tube TV as to graduate the electronics class in 1977 at that time a dumont radar scope/oscilicope...  And to my wife a $300 rabbit fur out of my hat! (Head) by my math ability! and the county of Los Angeles Civil engineer HOW I calculated the DMD area in surveying with 13 digit precision even before Bill Gates started the Microsoft! I repeat, I had more education than a lot of people had PHDs in philophy or in medicine because I had both parents as my teachers to add to it, my dad in the Air Force beeig a master himself as the inspector of inspectors on the flight line and my mother teaching me the other three 'R's before I was four. And I had my head shrunk so many times and that is just the beginning. I admit ans I do have a photgraphic memory since I was three months old. I need not to prove it to my building maintenance guy who could not even put in a sliding glass window and I did or be such a hot shot mantenace guy inspecting my apaerment because I know safety better than the HUD inspectors do by being on on guard duty for 23 long years at night! And being chosen as shop stewart while I was learning electronics as TV and radio repair! I have that proof in my cerificate of completion, (my EE Diploma) and a few others.

Good, Waste not your old PCs if they still work for you! And you might try intalling them on the other PC with XP YOU may be suprised that they will work also... EXCEPT, Hasbro's Battleship made for '95. The one that shows the video as the actual ship being hit and sunk and what part is being keeled over.  If you have the four parts WEP (Windows Entertainment Pack), it and all 24 prograns work perfectly in XP as I got from my version off 98 SE that wont shut down! Just copy it the root folder on the C drive as "C:\WEP" and build a shortcut folder inside it and a shortcut to the "GAMES" folder when you backtrack to where that is by LOCATE FOLDER as iot might be inside the"ALL USERS" folder. YOU have the tools, (Programs) on the 98 PC all you gotta do is get them on XP as well. some must be installed normally and some wont. Cyber Chess I have will work on a XP PC at first then bomb out as the memory usage changes, Hy version of Creep Night Pinball works even on Windows 7 with exceptions of the sounds, With XP I do not have to install it if I use it from the"UBALL2" folder, but the music must come from the CD! I figured out how to play the music, just find its folder and pay it with the media player while playing the game, you hear the game sounds along with it. MY version of "HOYLE KIDs Games 2" can be installed by the CD, but not all the files on the CD are in your PC, however you put that CD entirely on the hard drive in the "C:\Program Files", then run the second program you will get the intro AVI without the CD and two of the games: '"Crazy 8'" and "Old Maid",  can hear the three players speak. and its version of "Battling SHIPS" comments as when I get hit and when he or she gets hit, and you get the guns to fire when I put in the CD, music and the sound effects! ONE thing my brother taught me about Windows 98 and carried over to XP, that is how and where to put your installer CD programs and they can run off the HDD just as easily from the CD itself. That is if I want my HP printer to work the installer is on one of the hard disk drives and I have to wait when it tells me to plug it in the USB port (I do that at the printer end) of the USB cable as not to disturb the PC because the printer has its own table.

That is how come I can do what I can do in rebuilding my own  IN house PC NETWORK of PCs, It is foolish as to have just one! One is really a backup each other, if you get that drift! IF I lose an important file on one, I can quickly get  it from the other PC! Like "Shortcut (to the desktop)" in the "Send to" folder. I recovered it from the network server's drive just the same That is another discussion.

• Windows 7 and Vista support GPT 3TB single partitions
• Windows 7 and Vista can only boot GPT on systems with UEFI BIOS
• Windows 7 and Vista can mount a GPT non-booting data drive
• Intel RST device drivers before v10.1 do not support 3TB disk drives
• Windows systems with Legacy BIOS and MBR boot drives are limited to 2.2TB partitions
• Windows XP does not support GPT
• Windows XP sees a 3TB drive as 800GB on boot or data drives

Definetely, YOU better have that CD's product CD KEY ready to activate it within 30 days, THAT is in you CoA on your other PC in the back or on the side or on top of your tower, on a notebook, on its bottom. Copy it carefully on a piece of memo paper and stick it with the CD at all times! YOU can go one step further, by copying the entire CD on a second hard disk drive for safe keeping when you lose the CD or it gets damaged so you can copy it again back to a CD with the product key in a seperate text file for "Notebook.exe" can read, and that IS what I do! ONE shattered CD out of a thouand CDs and DVDs is enoughto learn my lesson in keeping backup "Plan B" handy! IF you have that, it is half of your recovery section battle, the other half is the resource CD that has the drivers to your PCs hardware, otherwise the PC cannot speak its English to its parts! OR else you get an enlarged display that you cannot adjust from or sound you cannot hear only beeps... You need your audio and video AGP drivers. (Accelerated Graphic Processor). MY retail Copy of Windows HE has expired after I installed it inside the fifth PC, but could again on the initial PC! Yeah, man, that is $40 per shot per PC! Then I went the CD of my laptop after that, and it expired after the fifth PC, but it still works with the laptop as not to notify me to activate. I even got a stupid notification about too many hardware changes in my 566i e Machine and then I had to activate it by phone then, I was not connected to the internet as I am now. As i say again, as I was told by BEST BUY: "They are afraid of piracy even to install it on another PC" That is why we all have to activate it... DAH!!

Let me tell you spmething about activation I know about... Some pieces of software will only allow keyboard entry of the CD product key, two I have will also allow you to copy from a text file to the text box making it far easier to enter it like entering a text message into the address box. when you do it on line,it is effortless and it is entered automaticly for you! 30 days is plenty of time for me to get enough of my customizations IN and the software I want in the PC!

LET ME give you a secret clue! ONCE you get windows to the "Welcome" screen, you no longer need the CD to install Windows, IF you pull it out ahead of time, you have to start over again!!!

I pull out the CD or DVD optical drive after I get the three critical pieces of software I need in the PC and the rest can be installed from the HDD in favor of the fourth or fifth HDD, that is where the 60 GB page file comes from in XP! MY therory, THE CD can be external even it is USB or IDE or SATA!!! You need a very large PAGE FILE to make Windows to operate as smooth as silk in all versions!!!! It does not have to be internal. There are external DVDs as such as Sony as I have, and Memorex USB external high speed 52x CD RAM Memorex one I have, it also tells when the USB port is 2.0 or 1.1 by it color of its ON light over the USB jack!'
