Hi,

This appears to be a new issue that the iTunes users are experiencing while trying to update to the latest version of iTunes in Windows 7. I checked in the Apple support sites and found out that uninstalling iTunes and then reinstalling it by running the installer with Administrator privileges has resolved the issue for many users with similar problems.

You may refer to the replies made by the user turingtest2 in the following threads from Apple Support forums, the steps are properly described there:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/24609674#24609674

https://discussions.apple.com/message/24616175#24616175

The steps that were voted as helpful in those discussions are as follows:

First, uninstall each one of these programs from your computer:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Then, download and save the iTunes installer by going to this link: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

And finally, reinstall iTunes by running the saved installer file with elevated permissions. Here is how you can do that:

  1. Right click on the downloaded installer.
  2. Click on Run as Administrator.
  3. Click Yes or Continue when Windows asks for your consent.

This should help you resolve this issue. If you are still not able to get the iTunes program working properly, you might also want to post your query in the Apple iTunes Support Forums. Here is the link to those forums:

Let us know how it goes. We will be glad to be of further assistance. Thank you and have a good day!

Ok I found this to work to get rid of it:

Chose to "Repair" the install (right click on it and choose this option in Add/Remove programs).  It still came up with the error (twice) saying it couldn't start the Apple Mobile Device service but I clicked Ignore both times.  When this was complete I could then uninstall it and finally.

This was the final hurdle for me. Thnx sooo much for sharing.

I followed these directions and everything is about back to normal - thanks!

When I went to the apple link (in the "Then" step) I didn't see just the installer so I just downloaded iTunes like a first timer.  Had to do the "Run as Administrator" step and manually open and I was off and running again for the first time since January 25 - when the iTunes update showed up.  I'll be thinking twice before just casually accepting one of those again.

I used Zune while iTunes was having it's issues.  To get most of the tunes I acquired during iTunes down time (some moved to iTunes when it started again and some didn't) I made a playlist within Zune, copied to disc, shut down Zune.  Reinserted the disc and when Autoplay opened, selected "open folder to view files".  Collapse to form one file, copy and paste directly to desk top.  The tunes show up individually and when clicked on they import into iTunes just fine.

I followed these directions and at first they didn't help. But what I had to do was go into iTunes download's "properties", then "compatibility", then under "privilege level" click the box for "run as administrator", then apply and ok. I also changed where the files would be downloaded, I had two program files folders and I chose the opposite one. This then worked. THANKS A LOT guys, I have been dealing with this for 2 weeks scouring the internet and recovering my computer multiple times to no avail. Hope this works for someone else too on the first try. Good luck :-)
