Windows 8.1 updates failing to install error 800F0920

My Win 8.1 Pro system was working fine until a few weeks ago when suddenly Windows Updates became broken.  The typical scenario is to choose one or more updates to install, it gets partway through, then reboots, then gets further along (to about 75%), then announces it can't finish the installation and has to roll back the install.  In the end, the update isn't installed.  The whole process takes hours and hours.  The first few times this happened it was in the middle of the work day and I lost use of the computer throughout the whole afternoon.

I researched the many, many similar problems that other people have experience and tried all the suggested solutions involving DSIM, SFC, deleting/renaming the update folder and files, booting "clean", and so on.  I even wrote a simple batch file to do most of this (copy at the end of this post) because I was doing it so often.  I was gradually able to get most of the updates for Windows and Office installed, except for three updates.  For those three, I cannot install them no matter what.  They are (required updates) , KB2955164, KB2966804, and Optional Update KB2962409.  I'll post the full error messages below.

The other new problem I've noticed with this system is that I can no longer change the network properties.  I was doing some tweaking on the network and I wanted to set the PC's IP address to a specific address (instead of using DHCP) and I couldn't change it. That may or may not be related -- I haven't researched it much at this point.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? It's hard to keep trying different ideas that don't work because it's so time consuming.  Since this system is at my office and I don't want to interrupt work again, I can only try doing updates at the end of the work day, and I find out the next morning whether or not it work.

Here are the error messages. You will see that the error codes are  all 800F0920.  Originally, my error codes were all either 80080005 or 80242014 and involved about a dozen updates.  So this is progress of a sorts.

I don't know how to run dism without network access, so how would I do that?

Supposedly you just need another WinSxS at the same level to point to with the /source:  switch.

The limitaccess switch will keep it from going to windows update and it will use the local system to repair. Similar to sfc but it can repair more and it can cleanup some stuff that doesn't belong

Do you have a NIC from a different computer you can try. I am curious if the failure to install is because the other one didn't uninstall correctly. Or, if it is the other networking issue breaking all NIC drivers from being installed

What is the status code for the unknown device is it 31? You can try to manually pick a driver from the PC and choose the Microsoft basic networking adapter.

If you need I can find the path for the Microsoft driver later just let me know.

Usually a Ethernet adapter will automatically be found during the boot up and at the minimum use a basic driver. Maybe the BIOS needs to be reset. There could have been a issue with the BIOS and the NIC before which was causing all the network issues and is now keeping the driver from installing or the device from being recognized.

I just wanted to give you an update.  After doing a refresh to Windows, which I would never agreed to if I had known it was basically a reinstall, that appears to fix my problem (no surprise).  At least, no problem so far, although I'm still reinstalling all the programs and such.

I did see a problem similar to your. In the other case there was malware, or at least something acting like it, doing an install of a driver every min. After I started working on it I was able to fix a few things which got some access back and then a scan caught multiple viruses. I don't know with 100% certainty all the issues were caused by undiscovered malware but I am guessing it is what they changed that caused the most damage. Basically, the biggest issue was a driver that no longer existed tried to install and failed and then tried again. It wasn't part of windows because it logged a failure every retry. Windows will try several times times then only present one failure and then time out and not retry.

It was blocking windows updates and a networking driver as well as other drivers. Not sure if something similar was going on in your case, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Good luck and let me know if you need another point of view in the future
