I thought it might be useful to capture some of the events from some of the event logs (not all events). I downloaded a sample of error events into text files and they can be seen at this link: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=9F39A85E3B815424!130&authkey=!AMd1FAyJ7iSrSA0&ithint=folder%2c.
Windows 8.1 updates failing to install error 800F0920
My Win 8.1 Pro system was working fine until a few weeks ago when suddenly Windows Updates became broken. The typical scenario is to choose one or more updates to install, it gets partway through, then reboots, then gets further along (to about 75%), then announces it can't finish the installation and has to roll back the install. In the end, the update isn't installed. The whole process takes hours and hours. The first few times this happened it was in the middle of the work day and I lost use of the computer throughout the whole afternoon.
I researched the many, many similar problems that other people have experience and tried all the suggested solutions involving DSIM, SFC, deleting/renaming the update folder and files, booting "clean", and so on. I even wrote a simple batch file to do most of this (copy at the end of this post) because I was doing it so often. I was gradually able to get most of the updates for Windows and Office installed, except for three updates. For those three, I cannot install them no matter what. They are (required updates) , KB2955164, KB2966804, and Optional Update KB2962409. I'll post the full error messages below.
The other new problem I've noticed with this system is that I can no longer change the network properties. I was doing some tweaking on the network and I wanted to set the PC's IP address to a specific address (instead of using DHCP) and I couldn't change it. That may or may not be related -- I haven't researched it much at this point.
So, does anyone have any suggestions? It's hard to keep trying different ideas that don't work because it's so time consuming. Since this system is at my office and I don't want to interrupt work again, I can only try doing updates at the end of the work day, and I find out the next morning whether or not it work.
Here are the error messages. You will see that the error codes are all 800F0920. Originally, my error codes were all either 80080005 or 80242014 and involved about a dozen updates. So this is progress of a sorts.

2014-08-15T05:06:45+00:00 Sorry I have been away and it took me a little to catch up
Check if these are started:
AFD, ahcache, BfLwf, CSC, dam, Dfsc, FPAV_RTP, NetBIOS, NetBT, nsiproxy, Psched, rdbss, tdx
Method 1:
Windows key + r > msinfo32 > Software Environment > System Drivers
Method 2: admin command prompt and type net start<name> e.g., net start afd
Method 2 will start them if they are stopped if they are stopped and you can start them that may let you change the network properties sheet. You may have to start all the services that may have not started too.
I don't know if the two items in each list are all services or some are drivers only. Double check services for them. and NSI is abbreviated
They are as follows :
WebDav Client Redirector Driver service depends on the Redirected Buffering Sub System service
Workstation service depends on the Network Store Interface Service
Network Store Interface Service service depends on the NSI Proxy Service Driver
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service depends on the Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock service
DNS Client service depends on the NetIO Legacy TDI Support Driver service
HCP Client service depends on the Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock service
Let me know what the result is and what the startup type of those system drivers and services are
Good luck. At this doesn't take hours to reboot and fail

2014-08-16T02:31:34+00:00 At the moment, I have no network driver installed. I talked to the network manufacturer (Qualcomm) and they advised me to uninstall and reinstall the driver. I was successful in uninstalling it (after considerable difficulty) but couldn't reinstall it. When I tried, the event log came up with these error messages:

2014-08-16T02:47:50+00:00 Did you check to see if those drivers and services were starting and running?
My first guess for the network adapter driver not installing is the registry still has a record from the old one and it is looking up the install.
Do you have a windows basic driver running the network or no network at all?
Look to see if any old registry keys are still present for the old driver and delete these. You can backup of your registry before editing it as I am sure you already know but I like to mention it when I give advice about editing it.
Also try deleting these keys/subkeys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\Config
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Adapters\ {GUID}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces{GUID}
To figure out which GUID should stay you can check the network adapters in device manager or delete them all then if it installs recreate the ones that do belong. If you reinstall the other network adapter those keys should be recreated then or on a restart

2014-08-17T00:48:47+00:00 Hi John,
I appreciate your help but those links are for really trivial and obvious issues and we are waaaay beyond that.
My last post in this thread is pretty old, but I've continued working on both the original problem in this thread (unable to install certain updates) and with my networking problem. At the moment, I can uninstall the NIC driver but then I can't install a new one. I can use system restore to resume networking, but, of course, then I haven't made any progress on any of my problems.
To answer you other question, I normally use F-Prot anti-virus, which is one of the cleanest anti-virus programs around. However,a the moment I'm only booting into clean mode, which means no anti-virus.
