Windows 8.1 updates failing to install error 800F0920

My Win 8.1 Pro system was working fine until a few weeks ago when suddenly Windows Updates became broken.  The typical scenario is to choose one or more updates to install, it gets partway through, then reboots, then gets further along (to about 75%), then announces it can't finish the installation and has to roll back the install.  In the end, the update isn't installed.  The whole process takes hours and hours.  The first few times this happened it was in the middle of the work day and I lost use of the computer throughout the whole afternoon.

I researched the many, many similar problems that other people have experience and tried all the suggested solutions involving DSIM, SFC, deleting/renaming the update folder and files, booting "clean", and so on.  I even wrote a simple batch file to do most of this (copy at the end of this post) because I was doing it so often.  I was gradually able to get most of the updates for Windows and Office installed, except for three updates.  For those three, I cannot install them no matter what.  They are (required updates) , KB2955164, KB2966804, and Optional Update KB2962409.  I'll post the full error messages below.

The other new problem I've noticed with this system is that I can no longer change the network properties.  I was doing some tweaking on the network and I wanted to set the PC's IP address to a specific address (instead of using DHCP) and I couldn't change it. That may or may not be related -- I haven't researched it much at this point.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? It's hard to keep trying different ideas that don't work because it's so time consuming.  Since this system is at my office and I don't want to interrupt work again, I can only try doing updates at the end of the work day, and I find out the next morning whether or not it work.

Here are the error messages. You will see that the error codes are  all 800F0920.  Originally, my error codes were all either 80080005 or 80242014 and involved about a dozen updates.  So this is progress of a sorts.

Hello sorry to see you have had this issue for so long. You may have done this but I didn't see it mentioned do you have this installed in your installed updates http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2919355/en-us?

Most of those error code reference that a rebot is required the first one you mentioned I am not sure what that is, yet.

Can you upload your c:\windowsupdate.log file to a onedrive public folder so I can get a beter look into what is happening around the failure?

I see you tried clean boot but I wanted to see if you tried safe mode with networking to see if they will go. Antivirus is a big killer of updates sometimes as well as firewalls. Perhaps this may not be an easy task but if it is possible can you use another network to try the updates.

I forgot try this for the network issue you can try and disable IPv6 to see if that helps and these commands too

    netsh winsock reset

    netsh interface ipv4 reset

    netsh interface ipv6 reset

    ipconfig /flushdns

Is IPv6 grayed out or does it work as it should?

    Hi Ben,

    • Which antivirus program are you using?

You may refer this Microsoft article and check if it helps:

How to solve connection problems with Windows Update

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/how-solve-connection-problems-windows-update

If you can't connect to a network, there might be a problem with your network adapter, refer this article:

How do I fix network adapter problems?

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/fix-network-adapter-problems#1TC=windows-8

    Hope this helps.

I wanted to add another tidbit.  I mentioned in some of my earlier posts that I also have a problem where I can no longer change the network adapter settings -- it tells me that tab is already in use.  I assume this problem is related to the issue with Windows Update but don't really know that to be true -- they just showed up at about the same time.  Anyway, when I look online for solutions to that problem, the most common suggestion I get is to uninstall the NIC from device manager, as well as all network drivers.  I did that successfully, then tried a reinstall.  To my surprise, I found that Windows refused to install the network driver (any driver from any source).  In the end, the only way I could rescue the system was to use a system restore to earlier  today.

I haven't made any progress on this and, as you can see from this topic thread, haven't gotten much help.  The last suggestion was to call MS support, which I haven't done yet for a couple of reasons (don't know the number; concern about getting charged; and I know it will mean spending hours on the phone).

    Hi Ben,

I have exact same problem with my office laptop running windows 8.1. It keeps failing installing KB 2962409 update. Each time I run this update it restarts my computer and then it gets stuck at 74% showing " Working on updates 74% complete". It takes literally about 35 minutes to pass this screen and get windows loaded and ofcourse, when i check the update history I see that it is failed. All other updates are installed with no problem. So far whatever suggested in this thread and other threads are followed but no success. Wondering if you managed to get your issue fixed.

    Thanks

    Sean
