I have recently downloaded the Windows 8.1 Pro version and I now have a "Secure Build isnt configured correctly build 9600" watermark on my desktop. I updated from windows 8 pro to 8.1. I tried to configure the bios to enable secure boot I cant find it anywhere on the BIOS screen. I have an ASUS X401a laptop. I also tried to edit the group policy that enable advanced boot options as well but nothing seems to work. Now my question is this fixable or will my laptop stop working after certain amount of time. This is very frustrating as I use this as my computer for school. Also Windows 8 has been activated since I checked for the key and its fine.

Hello,
I feel your pain trust me. I have one laptop I installed windows 8 pro on with a dvd. then I did the download of 8.1 preview, that is just one laptop. the one I mentioned in the earlier post. came with 8 PRO. then the preview and finally the app store update.
why is the secure boot there for is the question, I have learned only Windows RT has to have this to work, regular home / pro builds do not, it is not a requirement. I would turn it either on or off, your choice.
what I did to mine, while in bios, it is in your boot section, while I was there, I went ahead and deleted all keys that were issued to my laptop, on mine it is f 10 to save and exit, your machine will reboot twice and your onscreen message will be gone. remember the RT release is installed on tablets that use the ARM architecture. so if you have RT , you have to use secure boot. end the end of my battle, I turned it back on, although it is not mandatory, that is the way it came. or I would not had not gotten any watermarks in windows 8 pro. I also deleted the keys while there. if I understand correctly, secure boot has some control over the trusted software platform, IE - if you have RT, you cannot just add applications as one would in PRO, without breaking something, it kind of makes sense, but should have been explained up front, in my humble opinion.
so wrap up
RT = Secure Boot on is Mandatory 8 PRO.xx = Secure Boot is optional.
I also found it very necessary to do a soft reset in windows 8 pro, pre the 8.1 app download, I used the option, that did not delete my files, I think this will be mandatory as well, if one used the preview. you will have to run the windows update before the app store will give you the option, 3 manual updates gets the one you need, one just needs to, update, reboot, look at app store until it shows up.
I hope you find this of some help, I put many hours into these 2 machines, and I understand your frustrations, I have mine running now, and all seems well.
PS
My oldest laptop, Toshiba is NOT running Secure Boot and works great as well. :)
Its not just ASUS in my opinion. I have a DELL waiting on me now, I will know for sure after that, and will post what I find.

i have never bothered to post here but I am more than a little curious about what is up with this screwed up "upgrade" "secureboot isn't configured correctly" Build 9600 is just the start i have games and items online that i can no longer load or get to and would like to know why it is that this isn't fixed in fact why was this allowed to be released in the first place if it was going to mess up anyone with an asus system. even running the above items in compatibility mode for windows 8 does not allow it to load out (the game C9 i get a launcher and once i log in and hit start it tries to load but then stops). what do I have to do ?? maybe start a law suit ?? I am not going to mess around with my bios when it is obviously a software issue and update issue.. I hated windows 8 as it was and now windows 8.1 is going to force me to reinstall everything all over after 3 hours of updating to this piece of ****.. about to install Gentoo so i have an OS i know won't auto break my system.
Hello,
I have a new HP G7 , that came with 8 PRO installed, no changes have been made to my BIOS, nobody dare touch my machines :) , now this is clearly something in the 8.1 upgrade code, is it not? will MS be sending out the fix as an update, or is there one already?
again, mine came with 8 pro installed, its about 5 months old, and I did the update through the app store.
Thanks
Ray
My new Asus X550CC has the latest BIOS version on it!! But I couldnt find Secure boot in it,
So asked about this matter from ASUS and they told me that ,Microsoft will release a hotfix to resolve the watermark issue in November. So I have to wait until November....
