How do I stop Windows 8.1 Upgrade message?

In Windows Pro with Media Center 64-bit version, I opened the Windows Store and clicked on Windows 8.1 Upgrade just to see the details. I did not click on the Download button at all. Now there is a pop-up window every so often that shows "Windows 8.1 Upgrade will download and install within 24 hours".

I do NOT want Windows 8.1 Upgrade to install on this computer. Windows 8 Pro runs just fine of what little I use this computer and I don't want Windows 8.1 Upgraded installed yet on this computer. Especially with all the problems reported from other users and the insanely changes it makes to the system.

How do I prevent Windows 8.1 Upgrade from download and installing on this stand-alone system???

Hello all, I too was having this same issue. I am running Windows 8 Pro(X64) and am perfectly fine with it. Like the user before me who posted the same, I have NO intentions of upgrading to 8.1 and this notification was getting annoying. As Rajesh had suggested, I searched installed updates and I did locate KB2871389. I have uninstalled and hid this update from the windows updater. I have noticed that the first thing I still see when entering the windows store is the 'upgrade to windows 8.1' advertisement. I suspected that was unlikely to change. Anyhow, it will take some time to see if this fix will actually work as the notice to upgrade seemed to pop up randomly without any sort of regularity. I use my computer daily and after a period of time, maybe a month or so, I will post back and let everyone know if this fix actually worked. If the notification appears before then, I will report back immediately to let you all know that the fix did not work. This is one of those fixes that are going to require some patience due to the random nature of the notification. Until then, CHEERS!

UPDATE!!!! KB2871389 is NOT the correct update to uninstall. The CORRECT update to uninstall IS KB2885699. You can verify that by checking this link. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2885699/en-us Another simple fix is this; Run regedit, then navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\UpgradeNotification. Change the value of UpgradeAvailable from 1 to 0 Reboot And have a nice day! :)

Hi Nipper,

The reason why you are getting the notification about the Windows 8.1 update is because of an installed update on your computer. The KB Number of this update is KB 2871389. This update that is installed via Windows Update enables you to update Windows 8 or Windows RT to Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 RT when Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store. Additionally, this update fixes several issues in Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows Server 2012, and volume licensed installations of Windows 8.

Thus, if you do not want to update to Windows 8.1, then you may try uninstalling this update from your computer and that should stop the notification about the Windows 8.1 release on the computer. Please follow these steps and check if that resolves the issue:

Uninstall the update from the computer.

a) Press “Windows Logo” + “R” and type “appwiz.cpl” in the “Run” command box.

b) In the “Programs and Features” window, click on the “View installed updates” link on the left pane of the window.

c) Now, click on the update: KB 2871389 and select “Uninstall”.

d) Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.

e) Restart the computer if prompted.

You may now check if you are still getting the same notification from the Windows Store. In case, if you need to hide this update from the Windows Update, then you may refer to the section: “I hid an update and now I want to install it” given in this article:

For everyone saying that they're not able to stop W8.1 update,

Cancel all Automatic Windows updates & installations;

After that, everytime before you proceed with any update or installation,

search for these updates: "KB2975719, KB2919442, KB2969339, KB2975061, KB2993651, KB2871389 & KB2919355".

And cancel/delete them. Also, verify on microsoft's website regularly if there are any new KB updates that install Windows 8.1.

I don't understand why Windows is forcing their users to install Windows 8.1, doesn't make any sense at all,

I have decided to go with Windows for no other reason then their reliable and easy OS, but from the moment I have recieved bothersome and annoying Windows 8.1 updates, I changed my mind completly.

The fact that I have payed Windows for their Windows 8 version and none other, doesn't seem to bother them at all.

Why aren't there any choices for their important customers to choose from?

Why do I have to install Windows 8.1 when I'm more then happy with Windows 8?

Why do I have to loose my sound and other un-updateable drivers because of Windows implies us to update to a higher version?

I mean, as long as the services and help is still available for Windows 8, why do I personnally have to be stuck with their stupid W8.1 installation problems?

Now Windows, I have payed and decided to use Windows 8, it was my choice in the begining, and it is my choice now. Tell me why do I have to suffer the problems and driver losses because you guys imply that we download your dumb W8.1.

I DO NOT WANT TO, and there should be a "SIMPLE" and "EASY" solution to this problem, I want to be able to choose from keeping my current Windows 8 version and being happy, and NOT installing the newest OS (W8.1) to end up having a **** ton of problems that come with it.

Anyways, come up with a solution, or I'm going to change OS like most of your un-happy customers! :@

Hi again

I did a system refresh to prevent it happening again and I am in the process of re downloading the lost apps. While I was waiting I did some searching on another computer and I found this statement in the privacy policy for Microsoft. I am copying it here for other readers to be warned.

If you turn on the Update Services, regardless of which setting you have chosen,

required updates to some components of the service will be downloaded and

installed automatically without further notice to you. If you would prefer not

to receive required updates, turn off the Update Services.

There it is folks you have no choice. To completely stop updates is a complete security risk as mentioned above by Entegy. So our options are accept the **** they keep putting out or risk viruses. This is extremely frustrating. I did have 8.1 on this computer before and it caused many serious issues and I was unable to use many of the programs I originally used with version 8. My next PC will be a Mac!

I was actually on a support chat with an extremely clueless technician who kept trying to go in circular conversations about PID's and my M$ account and could not answer the question.

Thank you, for filling in where M$ has failed. Another poorly thought out plan by Microsoft ;P

Upgrading to 8.1 has many issues associated with it, from driver incompatibilities, to flat out product failures and issues like a lack of antivirus solutions. Not to mention, we have to re-install ALL our desktop applications - which has major software registration implications. Moving form 7 to 8 was bad enough.

So, based on this pop-up, is it fair to say that Windows 8 lived a support life of 6months? And why would Microsoft force a system wipe to move up a service pack? (8 to 8.1). I really hope that Apple DOES beat out Microsoft, they earn it by listening to people... which is funny to say about Apple.
