I use hibernate usually when I am about to move my laptop to a new location and I don't want to lose my windows session. although I do perform regular battery "exercise" (unplugging the laptop until windows says it has reached reserve
power levels), I normally keep it plugged in to the power supply as I infrequently move the laptop. My internet router is in inconvenient location for me to use it's Ethernet port, but that is okay. My internet connection is only 6Mbps down and 1Mpbs up, and
I have full signal strength through out the house and get 72Mbps through my wireless connection to the router. this is much faster than the internet connection speed. when I perform a speed test, I can get the full 6mpbs down speed through the wireless connection
(as long as no one else in the house is online too). I feel that having the full 100mbps of the Ethernet connection would result in a lot of wasted bandwidth since the connection to the internet is only 6mpbs. I am able to use RD (remote desktop) and RA (remote
assistance) through both the local network and over the internet with all features enabled, so I am happy just using Wi-Fi.
many third party defraggers still use the api calls of windows defragmenter. I am not familiar with defraggler, so I won't make any statements on how it is (better or) worse than windows defragmenter or Diskeeper. Diskeeper 12 Professional,
when all features are enabled has actually improved my access times on my laptop. the autodefragment feature defragments the system in the background. Since I use ReBit for my system backups which uses VSS, I have diskeepers VSS settings turned on, which the
system is not constantly creating new shadow copies every time a file is moved during a defrag. I have it set to the extensive autodefragment setting, which allows for free space and directory consolidation, the intelliwrite feature keeps files from becoming
fragmented as they are created. and I use diskeepers I-FAAST feature which move frequently accessed critical windows system files to the beginning of the drive. Diskeeper performance history is actually showing a 41% read and write access time improvement
over the last 12 months.
these features are the reason why I chose Diskeeper above other available products
IntelliWrite®
IntelliWrite® fragmentation prevention is a ground breaking technology that prevents the majority of fragmentation from ever occurring, dramatically improving Windows system performance. A small percentage of fragmentation is not
preventable and will be eliminated by Automatic Defragmentation. The combination of IntelliWrite and Automatic Defragmentation will keep your system running at optimum performance in the most effective and efficient way possible. Prevention of fragmentation
with IntelliWrite has been found to be more efficient than other defragmentation methods. IntelliWrite reduces the need for disk head movement and results in a reduction of system resource usage and power consumption.
I-FAAST
A Diskeeper exclusive, I-FAAST® Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology improves file access and creation on NTFS volumes by up to 80% (average 10%-20%) above and beyond the improvement provided by defragmentation
alone. This is the first industry implementation of "Disk Performance Calibration", the modern evolution of the outdated and inconclusive disk optimization strategies of the past.
InvisiTasking
InvisiTasking® technology is a proprietary technology developed by Condusiv Technologies that carefully monitors resource consumption on a Windows computer system and injects Diskeeper processing into the unused portions—and only
into the unused portions. InvisiTasking is so good that it is all but impossible to even detect whether Diskeeper is running.
I/O Smart
The Diskeeper I/O Smart® feature intelligently monitors drive access during defragmentation to ensure top system speed. Diskeeper will temporarily suspend defragmentation whenever other disk activity needs to occur, automatically
(I/O throttling). This proprietary technology detects whether or not the disk is busy with other I/O requests and pauses defragmentation to eliminate any potential interference with user or system needs at the "disk" level.
Instant Defrag This enhancement to Automatic Defragmentation immediately eliminates any fragmentation that is not proactively prevented with IntelliWrite. Rather than waiting for potentially extended periods of time for fragmentation
to build up, this feature provides uninterrupted peak system performance. Progressively more beneficial the larger the volume, Instant Defrag also saves system resources by minimizing the need for volume-wide analysis and defragmentation tasks.
directory consolidation
A Diskeeper feature that gathers (almost) all directory entries on a disk volume into a single area on the disk, instead of scattered in many places. Directory consolidation makes defragmentation more effective than it would otherwise
be. Directory consolidation requires sufficient contiguous free space into which the directories can be moved.
HyperBoot™
HyperBoot technology optimizes system boot processes to allow for faster system boot times. As applications are added or profiles expand, boot-up times become longer and longer. HyperBoot accelerates full computer start up and boots
a PC directly into Windows.
I use Disk Cleanup, but I click the "cleanup system file" option before I start selecting any cleanup options. I run it Bi-monthly unless I feel there is a need to do it sooner.
I also run my malwarebytes (free version) scan weekly and a Spybot Search and Destroy scan one a month. I run a full antivirus scan using Microsoft Security Essentials at least twice a month. the quick scan is setup to run every
Sunday. for all three of these programs, if I suspect there might be a problem, or if I am trying out a new utility or program, I run them immediately after said utility or program install. this routine has kept me virus, malware, and spyware free for many
years.
I used this routine on my old XP desktop as well, and it served me quite well then too.
Back when I first got my laptop, and on the occasional factory reset, I use Pc DeCrapifier (
http://pcdecrapifier.com/
) to get rid of some of the preloaded junk that Toshiba tries to push onto me.
