Error: 0x80073712 when installing KB 2919355

This error might mean that a file needed by Windows Update is damaged or missing. Here are a few steps that have solved the error for other community members:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.)

  1. Enter command prompt in the search box.
  2. In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator.
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, enter the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command.

If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

If you're running a 32-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1.14

If you're running Windows RT 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~arm~~6.3.1.14

  1. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth 2. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

  1. Install the Windows 8.1 Update from the download center.

 Windows 8.1 Update (32-bit version)

 Windows 8.1 Update (64-bit version)

If you have followed these steps and you still receive error 0x80073712, log files may need to be collected and reviewed. Please contact Microsoft Support so that we can further investigate your issue.

I saw the kb2969339 update come through this morning a good 6 hours before the normal patch Tuesday updates were to be released and thought it was strange. Applied it to the final computer tonight and ran Windows Update. KB2919355 went right through and installed and the rest of the updates are now being installed. Hope this solution works for others.  Thanks.

    A repair install (from windows 8.1 dvd)  then using the standalone updates did not work for me - 'the update is not applicable to your computer'

    I'm going to reinstall windows 8.1 on a formated partition as I don't have that much data to back up (only installed windows 8.1 end March) Hopefully this will not reoccur.

    More importantly the day after posting my original post we got a phonecall purporting to be from microsoft who said they would take me through the steps to fix this. My wife answered and fortunately gave no info and they said they will phone back. Definately sounds like a scam to me but question is where did they get the info? (phone No. name etc) I've never had a scam call like this before and never posted on a forum like this before. Have they hacked the microsoft account or what? anyway think everyone should be aware.

    This may sound patronizing, but it isn't meant to be, did you repair install with an 8.1 iso for your specific version and architecture of windows (for example, 8.1 Pro x86 installed, repaired with 8.1 [home/core, Pro] x64, not 8.1 Pro x86, etc)?

    Something wonky is going on there that shouldn't be... I've done 3 repair installs on my own system thus far and did walkthroughs with others, and never received that error before.  Those are generally generated when you either already have the specific software installed or are trying to install it to a version of windows it's not meant for.

    I'd like to verify the steps you took in case anyone else has a similar experience:

    1. Performed repair install
    2. Did you perform dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup?  (I realized I forgot to include this in the install tutorial, as I had put it in the tutorial I posted right before that for getting rid of the component store corruption and windows update cache problems).  This may not solve your problem, but is required due to the prior corruption and will take a significant amount of time to complete.
    3. what did you do next?

     2. I have done dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup so many times that to be absolutely   honest I cannot remember if I did it straight after the repair install or not. It is certaily possible that I did not and therefore I would not say your method does not work.

    1. I then attempted to use the standalone installers (which I had previously downloaded)  in the correct order (which failed)

    as far as the 'the update is not applicable to you computer' error is concerned - I am quite sure they are the correct windows 8.1 64bit updates and are not already installed
