RH6M6,

I saw the kb2969339 update come through this morning a good 6 hours before the normal patch Tuesday updates were to be released and thought it was strange. Applied it to the final computer tonight and ran Windows Update. KB2919355 went right through and installed and the rest of the updates are now being installed. Hope this solution works for others.  Thanks.

Jim

I completely understand your concern about the keys. The following is correct

MS Support has not been withdrawn for KB2919355 update issues and is free of charge.

However, if you purchased a new computer with OEM Windows 8.0, support will take you as far as they can until it's determined that a repair install upgrade is needed. Then they tell you, at least so far in my case, that they cannot (attempt to) fix it with an ISO download unless you first purchase the installation and activation keys. Cost of those one time use keys is retail price of around $119.00 . (No PRO on this system). Denying future security updates (by not being able to install the now mandatory Update 1) unless you fork over money seems a little less than honest to me. It's no wonder that software piracy exists.

I should add, for those following this column, that this is my second case of dealing with kb2919355. The first was resolved through a repair install upgrade which already had a retail purchased 8.0 from upgrading of Windows 7. One home computer and three college computers. Only the one college computer left to get resolved. I think I now know how IT people who manage multitudes of computers must feel.

Many thanks for your reply JW0914

When I try to run dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanupI get the message "The component store has been corrupted". I tried re-running it several times with the same result.

I am reluctant to carry out the ***Repair Install "upgrade"***at this time in case I encounter the same problems with license keys etc I had when I installed 8.1. I can't afford that degree of disruption to my recording projects at this time.

My inclination is to wait and hope that Microsoft comes up with a suitable solution via Microsoft Update. Failing that, I will need to plan for the possible consequences of a Repair Install "upgrade" and therefore carry it out at a time that is better suited to my recording projects.
