Error: 0x80073712 when installing KB 2919355

This error might mean that a file needed by Windows Update is damaged or missing. Here are a few steps that have solved the error for other community members:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.)

  1. Enter command prompt in the search box.
  2. In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator.
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, enter the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command.

If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

If you're running a 32-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1.14

If you're running Windows RT 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~arm~~6.3.1.14

  1. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth 2. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

  1. Install the Windows 8.1 Update from the download center.

 Windows 8.1 Update (32-bit version)

 Windows 8.1 Update (64-bit version)

If you have followed these steps and you still receive error 0x80073712, log files may need to be collected and reviewed. Please contact Microsoft Support so that we can further investigate your issue.

I saw the kb2969339 update come through this morning a good 6 hours before the normal patch Tuesday updates were to be released and thought it was strange. Applied it to the final computer tonight and ran Windows Update. KB2919355 went right through and installed and the rest of the updates are now being installed. Hope this solution works for others.  Thanks.

    yeah, it does need access to the install.esd file (which will need to be converted to a wim) in order to create the windows 8.1 gui.

    I don't think it's that, but the fact they moved their entire site to new servers over the past several days and due to that they're site was down off and on.  My guess is they stopped allowing registration to allow for less sign up errors during the server move... for example, I'm wondering what kind of havoc was wrecked when multiple new members tried signing up and then lost their connection to their server because of the move.  As soon as I post this I'm going to send a message to them asking why and when the registration will be available for new users wishing to register.  I can also email or message anyone links to download isos, but not sure how to make that work since the forum automatically blocks emails.

    We can complain all day about Microsoft should be taking responsibility, however, the fact is they aren't, nor will they ever.  If a user chooses to stick to the Microsoft should fix this because they caused this, you're they're going to be van winkle, so find a tree.

    The fact is, there are 8.1 ISOs that have not been tampered with that are not only readily available, but had every user I've had this same conversation with done this, they'd have everything fixed by now.  If a user wishes to take the stance they're not going to download a windows 8.1 iso from a software forum because Microsoft should provide the media themselves, those users will have patches withheld and will have no one to blame but themselves.  In other words, the solution is here, take it or leave it, but it doesn't change the fact a solution is readily available to every Microsoft customer.

    EDIT:

    Even though we all want to stick it to Microsoft, refusing to go to a software forum because Microsoft should be providing the media to us isn't hurting Microsoft... it's hurting the user.  Any user not updated to KB2919355 as of right now has 11 patches withheld... in a week that number increases.

    Got to the forum but they are not accepting new registrations. I would imagine the Win8.1PE setup tools require Win 8.1 to run? As in my main desktop machine, running trusty Win 7, probably can't run the Win 8.1 ADK anyway?

    Maybe I'll poke around with Win8.1SE that looks like it's freely available, just see what happens when I run it on Win 7.

    I've been meaning to put the older WAIK for Win 7 on my system anyway to make an Acronis PE Boot Disk.
